Alastair Reynolds fits nicely into the parametres given. Revelation Space and Chasm City in particular are excellent, rest of the novels set in that universe less so. Of Reynolds' other works, Pushing Ice is also very good.

I don't believe this. I never will. They just paid a lot of money for the license, they better have a pretty good idea of what they are going to do with it. Think about it for a moment. Does it make sense to pay millions(my guess) for something just because it might be useful?

I guess I might as well say something on my behalf, since I too was looking forward this game. I never allowed myself to become excited, though, knowing this could happen. Nevertheless I am extremely disappointed and angry that what I feared became reality. More than that, though, I am sorry...
