its no more difficult than other infamously difficult games like maximo, cuphead, or DMC3. You think its only remembered as the hardest game evah because of its marketing? if that's the case then gamers are even more easily manipulated than I thought.

I think it's just touted a lot as a posterboy for hard games in a nostalgic sense, "games were better in the old days". A lot of Nintendo games were quite difficult, not to mention some of them wouldn't even let you save progress

eh... that's a very different type of difficulty tho. the games were short and were often simply rented back in the day so making them shit your pants hard would ensure you wouldn't beat it on your first couple of rentals so they get more money and if you bought you get more bang for your buck. not the case anymore.

classic video game difficulty was often just bullshit like leaps of faith.

Sure. Still, whenever I hear about Dark Souls, it's often in a context of juxtapose with new vs old games, well, originally anyway, now the hype of it has taken on a merit of its own I guess.

don't get me wrong its a great fucking game. tbh the thing i love most about the soulsborne games are their art direction but no one ever talks about that nooooo...

I think part of it is also that a lot of people who say that don't have much more to compare games to either. Reviewers are very guilty of this as they have to constantly play the new titles that everyone is interested in. They likely only can compare games now to games at most a few years ago without reminders/refreshers.

It's because of the new generation of gamers. They were not born into a older generation when games were normally difficult like old castlevania.
