Matt Smith's tenure started out great, then became increasingly shite as it became clear that Moffett didn't know to create a coherent series-long story arc. (Clarifier: The shitiness of later Who was not the fault of Smith or Capaldi.)
Tbh all of new who's arcs have only vague ties across all episodes. Only real problem with Matt Smith era I have is the excuse they used to get out of the doctors fixed point death was a massive copout.
TBH, growing up as a kid and watching Nu-Who, the general consensus was that most people didn't care after Tennant left. Myself included. I rewatched and got up to about halfway through Capaldi before I couldn't enjoy it anymore. The show truly peaked with S4, and Matt did great with what he was working with. But fuck me if Moffat isn't garbage without someone to hold his crazy shit back.
