Other than the Salarians none of the aliens are designed to feel like they exist outside of combat scenarios, and well the Asari but the Asari are just the same blue chick in leather and Star Trek head ridges.

The most interesting species in Mass Effect are the Salarians and the Geth, the Salarians because they are literally all fucking assholes , borderline nazis who play god on the regular and would probably be the villains of any story if they didn't have profitable relationships with the other 2 main races of the counsil. And the Geth who are a collective AI who has developed religious beliefs.
