There's actually quite a lot of good remakes out there, it's just so many recently have been terrible. David Cronenberg's The Fly, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake, Brian DePalma's Scarface, Scorsese's Cape Fear, The Magnificent Seven and even the recent Dredd movie.
Yeah great film. I recommend watching the original Cape Fear then watching Scorsese's remake, because Scorsese did exactly what I'd hoped he'd do by using the Bernard Herrman opening soundtrack for Cape Fear over and over throughout the remake. It's not used enough in the original film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyUG59ojEhU
Apologies, felt like going on a Cape Fear spiel there.
I didn't care much for the original surface Tbh. I liked the scene where he gets super excited over a Tommy gun during a shoot out but that's about it.
