public transportation is seen as something for the lower classes in every society I can think of. In some more than others of course, but in every modern society, high status goes hand in hand with a shiny, expensive car. High status is never exhibited through a metro pass

The problem is that moving around the city right now is a fucking nightmare, too many cars, too many buses, not enough routes and no Metro. The Mayor is even thinking on starting construction for more Transmilenio (a type of bus that has it's own lane) on what is already a very busy street that needs as much lanes as it can get. Fucking politipuppets.

Have you ever played Cities Skylines? Roads *are* a nightmare, and it seems to be circular - all you can do is level a bunch of city blocks, in order to expand the roads - which only invites more traffic (it would be "intuitively" re-directed, since people prefer more efficient routes) and clogged up again.
