English is lucky in that the language is spoken almost everywhere, either as a learned language, or a native (large parts of Africa, for example), but it is lonely when it comes to intelligible relatives. As a Norwegian I automatically understand Swedish and Danish. Spanish speakers understand, to various degrees, Portuguese and Italian.
