Quake is the best one of the iD trinity (Wolfenstein 3D, Doom 1, and Quake) but I have a really hard time playing it with the OG soundtrack. Too atonal and _way_ too spoopy. I usually have the higher tempo Doom tracks playing instead. E1M1 is deliciously great for Quake.
(1/2) Quake is better than Doom in almost every area, and I think the sound design is fantastic, but it's fantastic in a way that makes me uncomfortable when playing. It nails the atmosphere just right, but I get the jitters with Reznor's tunes.
(2/2) I much prefer the darker aesthetic, the grotesque, Lovecraft-inspired monster designs, the weapons (though if I had to bitch, I wish there were more of them,) and that level design... Mmm... Doom had some neat levels, but they all felt kind of bland to me, owing to the 2D nature. Plus, I think there are fewer labyrinths in Quake compared to Doom. I'm not a minotaur. I don't enjoy labyrinths.
It always feels like a cheap way to pad out the game. If stuff is happening, I'm less negative, but in Doom, I was constantly backtracking and getting lost.
Uh... No, Graves. I have to call bullshit. There was one level I played in I think Doom II that took over half an hour to beat, with most of it just wandering empty hallways I had already cleared trying to find the path forward.
