1. The north part of F2 is pretty solid (barring boring rat dungeon @ Klamath), which gave the wrong first impression.

The thing is that I liked the original, but only because of the story and characters. The Master is still my favorite video game villain. The problem in F2 is that they kept the same mechanics, which I hate, and populated the world with shitty characters and two-dimensional villains.
They ficked up by reusing them and making them an all powerful force ala the Galactic Empire. The Enclave was not morally complex but they were grounded, they had limited resources and mostly dealt with the wasteland by indirect mediums, ultimately their plan being to poison all of them while waiting inoculated and safe in their rig. Bethesda just has them deploy countless Vertibirds full of soldiers.
Imo one of the strengths of FO2 is that it is a larger game, bigger scope, takes longer to play through, gives you more shit to do, more levels to grow, bigger battles, more battles. It also uses the map better, taking you from east to west, north to south.
FO1 felt a bit strange in that you mostly travel in a line through the centre of the map, with me expecting for the game to expand further, taking me east and west, but then it ends. Tactics is a bit like that too, you got so much landscape to the east and north particularily, that is never used.

Don't know about better but definitely more fun with more replay value.
