Alan Wake

The Vault Dweller

always looking for water.
Wow...this game surprised me.

Cons:

-Terrible camera angles as typical from a console port.

-Somewhat unresponsive controls.

-Combat is highly repetitive.

Pros:

-Unique combat mechanics.

-Good story. Also quite unique. (A thriller...that's new)

-Great music.

-Excellent graphics.

-EXTREME attention to detail. The game LOOKS like the Pacific Northwest. The stuff in the environment is very unique...there's even product placement which as much as it's there to act as a commercial it does add some realism surprisingly. Locations all have small bits of lore exposed by examining things. The songs were made just for this game in a way that FEELS wonderful. I can't quite express all the "little things" I'm trying to mention, but they're there.

I'd like to point out the "special" way I discovered this game:

I was watching a livestream of a person playing SC2. They had a custom soundtrack playing and I heard this HEAVENLY song that I just knew was written for some sort of media tribute. I found the song online and loved it even more to hear it was from a game. I asked around and found the game received some good reviews so I bought it. I found out the song wasn't just some fancy opening/ending thing meant to sound good. It was played at a pivotal moment in the story by a fictional band that was part of the setting and was searched out by the main character since the song contained clues to his search.

I also still have to play the two chapters of DLC. Also AW: American Nightmare.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Alan wake was a good game in the beginning. After a while, though, combat does indeed get extremely repeptitive and not scary anymore. Which is why those parts of the game where you're left with no guns after falling off something (happens like fifty times), and you have to run around and dodge shit, get incredibly annoying. I paused playing the game for about a week every time that happened, out of sheer annoyance.

The environment is indeed the best part of the game. They crafted a beautiful world - it's probably the best one I've seen out there. Of course, 90% of what you see throughout the game are woods, but still it's very well done.

I wasn't that impressed with the story, though. I saw 90% of it coming after the very first chapter of the game, and the ending is meh.

I remember one thing that was EXTREMELY annoying was that the game would save after the recap of the previous episode....

What an incredibly idiotic design decision...It should have saved after the END of each episode so that when I play next time I can see the RECAP when I start playing...

Instead what we have is that I see a RECAP of the stuff I just did when I want to put the game down and I don't see it when I start the game again...very frustrating...

I didn't understand the use of those recaps in the first place - I mean, I just played through it, ffs. It's not like the episodes were all that long or convoluted.

I bought it for 20 eurobucks and regretted buying it in the first place. It is boring with no real gameplay at all, repitive "missions" through always the same scenery and low res cutscenes with inane dialogues inbetween. I stopped playing it and just read a recap of the story online - glad I didn't play through this Twin Peaks ripoff.

How far did you get in it? I thought it was worth completing at least, with a decent atmosphere and a novel concept for combat. I kept playing just to watch the tv shows tbh.

I played up until the point where you meet that kidnapper guy the second time. How is the combat novel? It is always the same. :S

How the light factors in. The streetlights are like sanctuaries and all that. The game gets much better near the end. It was worth twenty bucks to me and I'm picky as hell.

The only thing that really bothered me was the perspective, how everything is off to one side. Other than that, I found the game to be pretty great.

You can tell its been heavily inspired by Stephen King, and it works to the game's favor, providing a sort of surreal atmosphere that just makes you want to keep playing, if only to get the to the bottom of what's happening. I like finding those book pages; I thought that was an interesting feature.

I actually liked the combat. It keeps you on your toes and is fairly relentless.

The only memorable 'scary' segment of the game is in the beginning with Carl Stucky in the lumberyard. The rest just kind of sucks and blends together.

The story was entertaining, but the boring and nearly endless combat really took the fun out of it.

They should have cut out 80% of the Taken, and made the remaining few significantly stronger.
