Another fake Fallout 4 trademark

WorstUsernameEver

But best title ever!
In short, an application for a "Fallout: Shadow of Boston" trademark has appeared recently on the German Patent and Trade Mark Office's website. The application had already been spotted at the end of October, but started actually being reported today thanks to a NeoGAF thread. Since then, the trademark application has been reported by IGN, Shacknews and VG247.

If it isn't clear already, my opinion is that this trademark application isn't legitimate. Tagaziel laid down a lot of good reasons at The Vault (he summarizes a number of discrepancies between this and Bethesda's previous trademarks, and also notes that the title doesn't fit Bethesda's M.O. concerning branding), but there's really one big test that the trademark doesn't pass: it hasn't been examined yet. Considering the frankly hilarious number of hoaxes involving trademarks, there's simply no reason to take applications like this seriously anymore. If nothing else, I suppose this shows there's an appetite for a new Fallout, though what Bethesda is likely developing right now probably doesn't match what I'd actually get excited for.

EDIT: Bethesda confirmed via Twitter that the Trademark filing isn't real.

if there is one thing I really hate, then its secrecy. I mean they always make such a big story about Fallout or the next Elder Scrolls game ... shesh, I really wish they would be more clear about their projects and just say directly, yes we work on it or no we dont work on it right now. Maybe its just me, no clue, but Bethesda is doing it all the time with their games since Morrowind.

Shadow of Boston is about the most bland and unoriginal fucking name for a Fallout game I've ever heard. Sounds plausible for Bethesda to do.

Anything with "Shadow" in the title is pretty overdone. Yes, it would be better to just leave it Fallout: Boston or Fallout 4, as opposed to throwing shadow in the title. Not any more original but definitely not as cliche. Doesn't matter because it's bullshit anyway. ;)

And it's working marketing-wise. There's really no reason for them to change this method, and no, nerds getting mad is not a solid reason to change a business plan. I mean, seriously, we already know they're very likely working on Fallout 4. Is waiting for a teaser trailer really all that different from getting a short "yes, we're working on it" announcement like with New Vegas?

Nerd? I am not following Bethesda or games in general anymore. I just find this flip floping ridiciulous. That is of course just my personal opinion. Most game developers are like that, but Bethesda is even a bit more protective and paranoid then most, particularly as far as possible leaks goes, I mean hey they are working on games, not nuclear missiles. I mean it is ok that you dont anounce something as long you actually dont have something to show, but just say if you're working on it or not. For example, I never had that issue with CD Project responsible for the Witcher Games.

*And yes, I understand this all works extremly well for Bethesda, but I just cant help it that I am somewhat bored by it.

With this rate Pete Hines probably will be dead when Fallout 4 comes out after all.

I prefer to hear about a game 5 months before the release than just 2 years while it is still in dev.

I think that Bethesda is waiting so long to say something so they can just make the game "perfect" and take their time.

Who would even fall for this? If something gets trademarked in a different country where it is created first is a sure sign of it being fake.

And yet, you see, Walp, every single time the big websites cover it. I guess that's good because it gives us a chance to say "lol, no, it's very likely a fake", but at the same time this dance is becoming a bit tiring, yeah.

Yes, but it will end soon when they actually announce it. Then everyone can go back to whining about Halflife 3.

*Shrugs* I guess at this point everyone assumes that Bethesda is working on Fallout4 anyway, what ever if it will be in Boston or Jupiter or god knows where, that is a completely different story.

I just suppose they don't announce it right away because people may get restless for it, that and if they got to update something before release, everybody could get annoyed that it'd been delayed. Best to wait until most things are fixed before unveiling it.

Fool me seven times, shame on you. Fool me eight or more times, shame on me.
