Best new RPGs

Fishos

First time out of the vault
Hello fellow Fallout fanatics!
Fallout is on my top favorite games list, and needless to say it's the best RPG I ever played (the second best is Torment).

It's been years since I played a role playing game, and suddenly I deeply miss the awesome feeling I had when I played Fallout 2 for months and months...

As awesome as the old days RPG's were, I'm kinda looking for something fresh that also look good. I know, I'm a low human being, but I'm still allowed for I am no mutant!

I want something like Fallout (not like Diablo, yach. I care about the plot and the character and stuff, not about killing people), and even if nothing compares to Fallout, there must be *some* new games that gives *a little* similar awesome feeling.

As Fallout fans, what new RPG's do you enjoy the most?

Seems many Fallout fans have enjoyed Planescape: Torment and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura

Arcanum was developed by many of the core team members who created Fallout 1 (Tim Cain leading the project)

However, these games are at least a few years old.

As for recent RPGs... i dunno. I don't play a lot of recent games. KOTOR was fun, but, again, that was a couple years ago.

Thanks reverend Layle, Arcanum looks neat and I know Torment is awesome because I already played it... Torment is the best RPG I ever played after Fallout 2.

The thing is I'm looking for something less... isometric :P

But the RPG market today is so full of garbage, that it's like only safe to play old RPG games. But since I'm feeling adventurous, I want a new game anyway. :D

Well, I plan on getting a copy of Arcanum soon (you can get it for $10), and while I hear bits of the game a unbalanced, the patches make it playable and the setting looks awesome.

KOTOR is not so isometric tho ;)... but i'm sure you may have played that already. I hear the sequel is not half bad either.

Although quite buggy, Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines is quite good.

I have just bought boiling point - road to hell. Havent installed it yet, apparently when the bugs will be ironed out in an imminent patch.

"Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines" looks quite good indeed!

I might give it a try :)

Keep the recommendations going people :D

Reverend: I did try Knight of the OR, and somehow it didn't appeal to me... Don't know why really.

It's too finished; not enough random trash laying around. Corners are 'too square', the interface doens't have any 'life' to it.

The whole game (and its successor) are sterile.

Vampire: Bloodlines is the only great RPG that came out in the past few years that I can think of off hand. Gothic 2 is a great game but definitely leans heavily on the 'action' side of 'Action RPG', and Morrowind is along the same lines; both games have aspects that make some people hate them with a passion though, so research a bit before you buy them. KOTOR 1 and 2 were tolerable, but the first one was too flat and the second one was too unfinished. It's been an uninteresting few years for rpgs in general, they're either non-existent or so dumbed down and on rails that they barely qualify as RPGs.

Edit: Thought Arcanum was older than it is; definitely play it, it has it's flaws but it's easily one of the best rpgs ever made.

Morrowind is worth a try, altough it's not for evryone and its go anywere do anything playstile turns off many people. But if you liked the freedom of the FO series give Mowrrowind a whirl and it's cheap now days :)

Bloodlines is a good game, not much freadom in it but the presentation makesup for that, unfortunatly not much of reply value in that one IMHO.

Arcanum is a mixed bag for me, nice atmosphere but bland combat and the freakin elves just made me go meh at about 1/2 game and uninstal it, still worth a try and should be cheap now days.

Jagged Alliance 2, altghou not a RPG, is a ncie gem of a game. It's a tactical combat game whit RPG elemnts, great combat system. Get it if you can find it.

Allow me to pointlessly derail this topic to once again reiterate that Vampire : Bloodlines is an excellent game spoiled only by a needlessly advanced engine and plagued by long and often loads and a large number of bugs.
Carry on.

Check out Project:Offset

Maybe its not real RPG...but it looks sweet. If it ever gets made.

I'd have to say Vampire: Bloodlines as the best recent RPG, although be warned that the bugs make the game incredibly difficult. The unofficial patches fix alot of them though (particularly the game-stopping bugs, thank Christ).

Close to it is KOTOR II. An excellent (but buggy) rpg, with great dialogue and (with a couple of exceptions) interesting characters. Story is good too.

agreed on Vampire, though I'd like to point out that the bugs are very hit and miss. I don't think I experienced a bug in my entire play through.

SO... with the patch, Bloodlines is a very playable game, yes?

(If it is still bug ridden AFTER a patch, i don't know if i want to even consider purchasing it)

It is a very playable game anyway. I only experienced one bug (well, I only noticed one bug, at least), and although it was a game-breaking bug, googling quickly got me a solution.
I had to play it without the patch, though, since the patch wasn't out yet.

cool!

However, I'm gonna need a boss-hog PC for this game eh (I got some fast computers, just my graphics cards are from yesteryear....)

Not really, it ran on my old bucket just fine. All you need is a shitload of RAM or the loads will kill you. I'd say at least 1Gb to avoiding being irritated, 2Gb for comfortable play.

P.S. Yes, I know it runs on less, but I fucking hate loading.

P.P.S. Oh, yeah, IIRC you need a DX9 card...

I encountered 2 game stopping bugs (which weren't difficult to correct), and numerous crashes and reboots. The patch got the majority of them, but the game definitely lacks a lot of polish it could have gotten had it been better made. Nonetheless, still well worth it.

It runs perfect for me now on 1Gb, 2Gb might be over-kill.
