Bethesda to buy another IP?

Put this on the unconfirmed rumours list, but apparently Japanese Famitsu has an interview with Bethesda (local or otherwise), in which Bethesda notes they're going to work on yet another IP made by someone else. From About Games.
In the latest edition of the XBox 360 Famitsu, American software developer Bethesda spoke in detail about their plans for 2009 and beyond. First, they announced they were really satisfied with the sales of Fallout 3 in Japan. Bethesda is one of the few Western developers that has managed to have any success with their games in Japan, with both Fallout 3 and Oblivion selling 100,000 copies in the region.

Further, on the wings of success, Bethesda is planning on releasing multiple games in 2009. Whether they meant developing or simply just publishing was not really clarified. They are very optimistic, indicating they will only release quality titles that would average reviews of 80%+. New Elder Scrolls? It isn't too far fetched.

The most interesting thing to note, however, is that the developer is working on a "surprising" new game involving another developer's franchise. If Fallout 3 is any indicator, whatever franchise Bethesda is working on, it's in great hands.

Ok, two things:

1. "Our games always get 80%+" = arrogant

2. Oh Good Frith.

3. Somehow my theory of "Zenimax bought Fallout because they don't trust the creative stock present in Bethesda" sounds even more likely now.

new IP?

When will game companies start coming up with new franchises again ... new stories and games that erally dont feel "similar" (like Mass Effect to Kotor, Or Fallout 3 to Oblivion, C&C to Generals ...)

I ask my self if that is true which IP next will be Oblivionised by Bethesda

Didn't someone joke about them making an Arcanum sequel ? Scary if true. Really though, they're turning into the Kevin J Anderson of the Game industry - just working in other people's worlds (and doing a piss poor job of it sometimes)

They have expressed interest in making a superhero game, but that wouldn't really be "another developer's franchise." Maybe they exploited their cozy relationship with MS to get MechWarrior or Shadowrun. Or perhaps they're collaborating with a Japanese dev.

Champions? City of Heroes? DC Universe? There's plenty of franchises that already have been under game development.

Why are we thinking single-player anyway? If this is true, it's probably on topic of an MMO, considering the timing.

I can't understand why people find Bethesda's games interesting. Running around exploring a boring huge world isn't interesting. It's boring and time consuming.

Something tells me Bethesda is gonna tank. Someday. Hard.

They specifically mentioned Batman. But they could go after Freedom Force. That would be weird.

Anyway, I assumed that their first foray into MMOs would use the ES license, since it's free (to them) and well established.

I'll play the devil's advocate here... I'd like to see an Arcanum sequence and/or remake, even if done by Beth. Thought I'd like to see it done by people at least half competent, of course.

I mean, it's no secret here that I 100% hated combat in Arcanum, simply crap; while Fallout 3 combat is shit in comparison to FO1, FO2 and FOT, it feels way better (IMO) than arcanum did.

Beth may have raped the FO lore and weapons, but the PA fell didn't seem to be so hurt - hell, even the deco art and stuff (those creepy crying statues and all) where decent.

I think they could keep the "steamwork and magick obscura" felling, which I care about, and rape the rest, which I don't care about at all

Please, GOD, don't let such an heresy happen...Bethesda embodies almost everything that is wrong with western crpgs these days so I don't see why I would want them to rape another "franchise" I love.

They'll tank along with the rest of the economy if nothing else.

Oh please. Arcanum's settings is umpteen times as complex as Fallout's, which is pretty basic at its core (and works so well exactly because it's so basic), yet they managed to fuck up Fallout's much more established setting pretty neatly. No way they could handle Arcanum.

Videogames actually should do relatively well. They provide a decent bang for your buck, and people like to nest when times are tough. I suspect that Beth will do pretty well until they get some real competition. There is an obvious demand for their sort of game, and I don't think it will go away soon.

Anyway, I doubt Beth would have a use for Arcanum. That setting is too weird. They need something with more mainstream appeal.

Woah! the way I see it they already have too much on their hands! Fo4, the new TES, whatever else they work on and a new IP??

This could actually be good, even if they got Arcanum's IP (don't really think we'll see no sequel nor spin off to that game though).

Because it could mean two things: either they will rush things so that they can release all that, meaning less dialog, less character development and story, you know overall even less quality

OR

They will hire new, fresh (talented! ?) people, which may lead to something good... perhaps creating subdivisions and sending all they have now to the new TES and the new people will be in the new division working on FO4 and the new IP..... well I suppose that if I'm dreaming like that I could just dream that obsidian buys the fallout IP, decides FO3 to be noncanon and develops another sequel.
