Bring on Iran

Awesome.

Unfortunately I assume we are still decades away from being able to weaponize a death ray into some sort of Ion Cannon and being able to level entire Afghan cave networks with said weapon? :(

I don't know what's so "awesome" about getting more and more things people kill each other with.

This blocks missiles. As in ICBMs. This actually protects lifes.

Seconded. Really, current lasers can't become a more dangerous weapon than what's shown in the article, i.e. to shoot down a target in the air. It's just a sort of gun, just millions of times more precise. Chirurgical.
Only problem I see is the laser was fire from... a plane. I'm not sure it would be a convenient system in case of large scale nuclear attack. Still, it's nice to see progress in the anti missile research.

The thing I'm not really sure about is... isn't missiles themselve a better way to shoot down missiles, than lasers deployed on planes ??

With the invention of this, people will invent other shit to ignore those things. It's a circle. And don't tell me that U.S. Government won't use such technology for offensive weapons.

didn't the U.S. make a missile laser defense system called Star Wars?
No, the U.S. never manufactured or launched any practical scale, working prototypes or operational satellites for the Star Wars program. Some people think that it was total vaporware with pie-in-the-sky ambitions. Others think it was Ronald Reagan's genius to make the Soviets think the U.S. would develop some amazing game-changing defensive system (even though it was out of reach back then) only to spur the Soviets into wasting money while trying to play technology catch-up to vaporware (the Soviet economy was already in a bad place at that time).

Still, regardless of its (back then) technical infeasibility, the Soviet generals might have feared that such a weapon would cause the U.S. to launch a nuclear attack on the U.S.S.R. with the reasoning that a preemptive attack would solve the defense problem and that any missed warheads would only result in acceptable losses. And then the U.S. counter-point to that fear: what if the U.S.S.R. launches to prevent us from ever gaining that upper hand?

Of course they will, and it is a good thing. I would rather we have superior technology to kill the enemies of my country then the enemies of my country have superior technology to kill my countrymen with.

Not sure what is so hard to grasp about that. Thankfully Hippiesh notions of "Lets all thrown down our weapons and just get along" are not a factor when it comes to us pumping billions into weapons R&D.

This is my favorite theory. It tickles me silly to think that at some point the Russians might have actually been afraid of our fictional Star Wars death ray.

Ronald Reagan was truly one of the greatest Americans to have ever lived.

Bal-Saggoth, I assume you're from US?
Ok, everythings clear - I'm out.

Well obviously I am, however it hardly matters. I would feel the same way of any country. I would want my government to develop the best technology possible to help save the lives and give my nations fighting men and women the edge in combat.

You act like the US is the only country in the world up to no good. I'd say that the US is lower on that list than some other countries.

For example, that apparently love nuclear weapons and kinda don't like Israel.

So it's really not important to research things that would protect the US. That's right, the US is the worst country in the world. I forgot. *roll eyes*

It's more - many americans see a potential enemy in almost every other country. And now they have to develop weapons "to save their civilians lives" because they've been bitching everywhere on earth.

That's a blatant lie. Sure, maybe a few countries. And what the hell is wrong with a country protecting itself from a MINORITY of countries that may or may not prose a problem in the future?

You mean the "axis of evil"? :D

For sure it's not every country and I understand that every country has to protect itself if it wants to be a "global player". But why is it so, that most of the extreme-islam countries want to see america burning? Of course they don't like the whole western civilication, but america is always the first one when it comes to "I hate the west!".

Perhaps it's the fact that people can become rich billionaires for being dirty drunken whores? God bless America.

perhaps is the fact that these americans have become rich billionaires in the last century thanks to intervention in places they had nothing to do with, destroying lots of lifes in these places?

Perhaps the US learned from the best huh, ever thought of that?

The same people who bitch the loudest were also the ones who did it themselves but fucked it up.

Hating the big guy is un-evitable.
