Buyer's Remorse

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
I hate Steam's refund policy. When you love a franchise, it takes time to register when everything you loved about it is dead. For a long time I thought you guys were too hard on Bethesda: I even enjoyed Skyrim because it was beautiful and exploring it was a joy and I hate Elder Scrolls (I got the game stupid cheap so I bought it).

Fallout 4 makes me think, what have I loved about this franchise and what I hate about it.
This is what I like:
The biting satire
The politics
The weapons
Any creature created by genetic engineering
The retrofuture aesthetic

Things I have never liked:
SCIENCE!
Any creature created by RADIATION
The "Vault Behavioral Project"

I knew from Fallout 2 there would come a day Fallout would become too fucked up to be workable, but I always thought it would be Chris Avelonne who would do it.

Fallout 4 is everything I loathe about Fallout, put in my face, made central to the plot, and the story is badly written, badly told and nothing but the last choice matters.

And I probably deserve shade for this, I was stupid enough to pre-order the thing. I'll NEVER pre-order another game, not even if Obsidian gets four years to make another Fallout. If I could get my 90 bucks back, I would delete this piece of garbage off my Steam library and never speak of it again.

Fallout is dead to me. As far as I'm concerned Fallout 3 is semi cannon at best and Fallout 4 never happened. There's Fallout 1, 2, Tactics and New Vegas. How do I mourn? I put a lot of hours and more than a little bit of my soul in this series....and now what? Wasteland 2?

and now what? Wasteland 2?
It's worth a try at least.
Otherwise, check out Underrail or Age of Decadence. Clearly Fallout inspired in combat and world-building aspects, though the former places a greater focus on exploration while the latter is more about choice and consequences.
If you like adventure games, there's Primordia.
Otherwise, there's always mods to make the old ones feel fresh again. Heard Fallout 1.5 is great, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
(I haven't played Fallout 4 so can't comment on the rest)

Branded Fallout games died in 2004 with Fobos, and were ponctually resurrected with FoNV.
Although, there are community mods and indie games that takes inspiration from Fallout.

And there is a dozen of fan-made adventures on the Fo1-Fo2 engine, and available in english. (13V, Megamod, Last Hope, Oblivion Lost, Wasteland Merc 1-2-3, Shattered Destiny, Vault Rats, Ardent's mod, Living dead, Fallout 1.5 Resurrection, Fallout of Nevada. And more are coming)

Welcome to the club.
Don't I know you from the TTW community already?

Yeah Fallout 4 is continuing the TES tradition of let's turn our traditional RPG games and strip them of RPG elements while simplifying the rest on each new game. Fallout 4 is just the last one, I can only imagine what the next TES and next Fallout game will look like.
I bet it will be as if Counterstrike had a baby with ARK: SE, but still using Creation Engine.

And also Olympus 2207 (not connected to the Fallout universe but made on the same engine). Vince hides some bretty good stuff on his forum.

Can't recommend either, because Wasteland 2 spends lots of time on stupid fluff and gameplay hardly can be comparable to Fallout: Tactics.

I advice to relocate to some other franchise. Shadowrun is fairly good and consistent.

I bought F4 day one and was in denial for a few weeks (see my posts from about Nov2015-Jan2016) but even I had to look at it for what it is.

It certainly is the worst fallout game since BOS (which I used to own, sadly, it's worse than I thought).

Fallout 4 is just bad however, and a lot of people seem disappointed with it (which is a good sign).

I doubt Bethesda would learn, but who knows?

I mentioned those which were available in english (or close enough for Fallout of Nevada).
If we count untranslated adventures, i am aware of Global Mod, Olympus 2077, The Last Frontier, The Next Day, but there could be more.

I would like to provide more detailed infos on those mods before the year ends, but only about those i can understand... (and there is also the solo mods for Tactics and Fonline to take into account)

Do a detailed review and maybe we can run a news post on it.

Depends on the form of it. I'd like to gather intels at the same place and have the review lenght depends on the content. If the content is thin, so would be the comment on it. The point is to help people decide which one they would like to play.

Hrm. Should be comprehensive. Too many projects going so I feel like I am spinning wheels.

Shit don't want to derail. Buyer's remorse? I regretted buying Alien Isolation on PS3 because it ran like garbage.

Yeah, I think I'm going to be playing Fallout 2 total conversions for some time. I'm playing Fallout 2 for the first time in years and while the story isn't nearly as deep as New Vegas, it just blows my mind how much better it is than anything I've ever seen in a Bethesda game. I knock people unconscious! I forgot that was possible in 1 and 2.

I'm going to have to remember this list.

Try some mods for fallout games I mean at least their free

Oh I'm hoping Fallout 4 has some choice mods. Mods that take me far away from the Commonwealth. I've played thousands of hours of New Vegas mods, many of which were marvels to behold. Fallout 4 is so bad right now everyone's busy making weapons THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE GAME.

Skyrim was a puddle, but at least it was pretty to look at and made sense. Also it had enough people in to kinda justify the amount of bandits. And it had horses. Bethesda retconned cats, why not horses too?

Can't be wrong with more and more incline. Also not every single NMAer only english-speaking.

Not sure what is your point.
From my POV, i have to start somewhere. And i rather play those i understand.
Plus, i can also share some intel with french community that play it or translate it in french.
Can't play or understand russian games and they are hard to translate. (and share)
If i know enough about english ones, i might try seeking intel about the others.

A silver lining for me personally was that I quit playing Team Fortress 2 a bit before Fallout 4 was released and that I funded the purchase by selling stuff from my TF2 backpack on the Steam Market. Too bad that I played too many hours (21, haven't touched it since December 2015) to qualify for a refund...

Yeah it took me 78 hours to exhaust everything and realize there was nothing there. I wouldn't have half the problems I do in Fallout 4 is the game was...40 years after the apocalypse. Maybe closer to 20. Then it would make sense for these easily assessable buildings to still have loot in them. The biggest problem is, I don't believe this world. I don't believe it all. And Bethesda isn't interested in making sure that everything is there for a reason and if it's untouched there's a damn good reason.

How long does it take to go from anger to acceptance? I need to accept that Fallout is probably dead and I need to cut my losses, it's just....I'm too angry. Cause it's not different, it's lazy. They don't have dedicated writers...well they have one. And not a very good one. They kinda half assed Fallout 3, but they REALLY half assedFallout 4. I can't even respect their 'vision' it's like Joel Schumaker's Batman and Robin.

Joel Schumaker's Batman and Robin
To be fair at least that's entertaining. And I dunno you tell me. I had finally cooled down about fallout 3s mediocre awfulness just a a year ago and BAM! They release an even worse sequel. After New Vegas. Thats what really gets me. NEW VEGAS, the terminator 2 of video game sequels, was followed up with the highlander 2 of video game sequels. Its embarassing. But what really really gets me is that of all the improvements NV made to the mechanics of 3d fallout such as, the faction system, traits are back, ammo types, the ability to craft ammo and survival items, weapon mods, fixed skill checks, massive amount of weapon variety, dt/dr, massive amounts of armour variety, most varied enemies in a fallout game... And so on, fallout 4 didnt even attempt to implement or improve on any of it. The only thing fallout 4 has on NV is it finally brought back morrowinds patchwork armour system... Well kinda.
