Character name length

unacceptable

First time out of the vault
The name of your character seems to be limited to eleven characters.

Is this some kind of game engine limitation, or could this limit be pushed a bit upwards without a lot of work?

For example if one likes to have a name and a surname at the same time. :) It bugged me too sometimes.

Short names get boring.

[kidding] Nobody "needs" long names ... nobody needs names at all. Why not restrict it to three characters? ... No, wait. Then you'd have to call your character "Lex" instead of "Lexx." ;-) How about one character: that still leaves you with 26 possibilities, plus digits. "How goes the quest, A?" [/kidding]

In all seriousness, though: 11 characters is a bit short; it restricts one's creativity. But I'm guessing that longer names will break some dialog formatting, if not game functionality. Longer names would be great, but as far as priorities, I'd add that to the wish list well below bug fixes and restored game content.

(Interesting fact: "unacceptable" = 12 chars - won't fit in the standard name length of 11 chars.)

Well, 3 or 11 letters is a big difference.

Also I never name my characters with my internet nick, that just kicks me out of the gameworld. :p

A lot of the cool names I think of are too long. Many of the marginal names are, too:

Man With No Name
Noneya Bidness
Vault Dweller
Sgt. Slaughter
Corporal Punishment
Major Asshole
The Exterminator
Max Brockitanski (Mad Max)
Clint Eastwood (j/k)

Sure, those are bad examples off the top of my head, but it's fun to mix it up and play with a name that has first & last name in it, or one that's longer and silly or just cool. Eleven characters? C'mon ... most of the people in the world have longer names than that (first and last).

However, no matter how long you make it, someone's sure to complain that their name won't fit. "Wanderer of the Wastes who Kills all Slavers on Sight and Eats their Bones" - sorry man, you're going to have to shorten it somehow! heh

So again, seems like something neat to have but low on the priority list.

I see no reason to type in more than the forename. In most cases in the game, the dialogues are written to fit just the forename anyway.

Of course, if it's possible to allow more signs, why not... doesn't hurt me, will never hurt me.

I generally agree. Some first names are still longer than 11 chars, tho ;-) (But not many!)

Yes, the question was if the char name length is 11 characters short due to a game engine limitation. I take it that any player who wants a long name will have to take strange formatting into account. The formatting limit lies with dialogue options I suppose.

This was never a "why I want a long name"-thread. I believe that there are quite a few people here that are familiar with the current Sfall engine improvements, and that extending the possible char name length could possibly be a small thing to change.

I believe that most people prefer to have a few characters to spare when their name is done, rather than the opposite way. With the new bald dude model I had to settle for "Rob Halford" since "Judas Priest" was one character too long... :( ;)

OT: Bald dude, leather jacket...
