Characters, the good and bad.

Starwars

Mildly Dipped
Were there any characters in the game that suck with you as being particularly good or bad? And for what reasons?

As much as I think voiceacting hurts games at times, I think Mr House is a character that greatly benefits from the voiceacting. You can get a lot of backstory and such from him if you help out and if you're working against him, putting him down is one of the more satisfying things in the game I think.

Chief Hanlon is also a character that really comes to life through the acting and makes him stand out. And I haven't even completed the quest that involves him.

Cass was a lotta fun to have along, just for ass-kickery attitude. She had some really funny lines I think. Her VA wasn't great though but pretty servicable still.

As for the bad, well... I'd have to say that Mr Fantastic is one of those "this... this guy!" type of characters, similar to Myron, though that's not bad in itself I suppose.

Many of the NCR people, while having their own backstories, really "blended together" after a while. The repeating voices don't help.

The Legion dude in Cottonwood Cove (I think), Aurelius something? One of the more extreme examples of how wrong the whole cosplay Roman douchebaggery can go. Looked very silly and his entire conversation seemed to be rather bad.

Legate Lanius, while looking surprisingly badass, doesn't even feel like he fits in within the Legion. Why on earth would Caesar choose this guy as a successor?
Also, if you work for the Legion, the first time you see him (when he sacrifices people) is a real "they tried to make him badass but only ended up making him feel stupid" moment. Same as the build-up when you converse with people around the camp. Like the trader who said Lanius killed a brahmin just for standing in his way.
I mean, that's not terrifying... That's a temper tantrum on the same level as Saren having a hissy fit in the early parts of Mass Effect.

EDIT: Goddamn, posted this in the wrong section. If an admin would move this I'd be grateful.

I enjoyed Arcade Gannon. When commenting on a location or situation, he provided some good insight and background. He seemed like a real person to me. His backstory was interesting, although I'm a little disappointed that I didn't discover his complete history until near the end of the game. Very well written and voice acted. Frankly, I found his history delightful and surprising.

I purposely don't select combat monsters as companions -- that's boring to me. Similar to real life, I prefer the company of intelligent or interesting people. I don't even bother engaging anyone else.

I picked up Ed-E on a whim, finding his log tapes an interesting, albeit brief, enhancement to the overall experience. Sure, he's just an eye-bot, but I became attached to the little fella, although he wasn't a person.

I think the only 2 npcs that I didn't really liked where Bright and Chris from the quest Fly with Me.

I didn't really liked the idea of the quest, Ghouls going to a higher plane on a rocket? And making this crap into some kind of salvation? Nah
And a jackass who thinks he's a ghoul? Most times when I finish this quest I just shoot Chris down for being such a dumbass.

On the about companions, I've seen Veronica (but never got her with me), and had Boone, Cass and Arcade as a companion. I can say Arcade was the best of them, best development, best back story.

His conflicts about himself and his life back in California where really well done.

Cass was Ok, I just liked her because of Cassidy, and Boone is fine too since I like sniping, but he really hasn't added anything interesting yet. I guess soon he might just talk to me in the middle of nowhere about a quest and I might get something to learn from him.

But still, Arcade was the best NPC so far.

Yes Man is easily my favourite character, though a large part of that may be due to the pleasant surprise I got when I met him. Just opening Benny's bathroom door and speaking it him for the first time...Very funny and unexpected.

Cass get's major props, if only for the line "No one has a dick that long, that even long dick Johnson and had a fucking long dick!" I also liked Veronica a lot, but little things started to irritait me about her. But I think that's probably true for all companions, once you've learnt everything there is to know about them I find I usually just stick them in Lucky 38 so their random lines don't start to bug me.

As for characters I hate...Well, there arn't many I can think of. Even the ones I'm not too keen on are usually well fleshed out enough that they don't bug me, or just arn't around for very long. There was one occurance where I met that black guy in Gomorrah at part of the quest there and it's the one occurance I can think of of really cringe worthy voice acting. I haven't stayed in Caesars good books long enough to really learn much about the faction yet but, judging by the general opinion here, I'm not sure I want to.

Well no one of the Legion really was a chracter that impressed me. They either feelt like "romans gone wrong" or simply "silly" (like Lanius or Lainus Los-fa-ckus what ever ...).

Benny was awesome. I really liked that character. Even though he tried to kill you. Twice.

I liked Vulpes, he was... interesting. And I liked his VO

I think Vulpes Inculta was pretty nice, when I first met him. I really couldn't fight him at this moment, because he frightened me for a short time. :p

He said something like: "If you don't agree with what we did here, you're free to try and attack me".
And I agreed completely with what the Legion did in Nipton.
Plus, I was pretty sure this guy was to be involved later in the story, so no need to kill him right there.

Second playthrough I blew his head off before he talked to me and watched his men run through my home made mine field.
He is pretty much the only Legion character I like as well.

Well, it might have been right to clean up the city, but the way it was cleaned up has been pretty sick...

Characters I've also liked have been Julie Farkas and the King, regardless of how the faction of the King works in the Fallout setting. I really liked his character and voice over in the later run. When I've heard of the Kings first, I thought I will totally hate them, but dunno.. with the King's character, it somehow fits to Freeside now for me.

I liked the King also, as I really liked his voice acting, and his story. The thing I liked with the King was that he came from an under priviliged and swept under the carpet society, yet he still believes that freeside will be eventually greater than vegas. I thought even though hes a gang leader, he's sounds like an all around good chap if you know what I mean, like a good guy to have on your side.

NMA got a slowdown just right now, which might be the reason for that.

Just did Arcade's quest and that was pretty nice as well, though it's a bit of a shame that so much of his character only comes through in that quest (as it's so late in the game). Given the size of the game, it kinda feels a bit random just when you're gonna get a nugget of dialogue with some of the characters. But I guess that's also the charm of it in some ways.

But yeah, Arcade was pretty nice. Since companions in RPGs tend to have very "strong" personalities, whether it's dark and gloomy like Boone, kick-ass like Cass, crazy like Lily etc, it's kinda nice to have someone like Arcade who really feels pretty normal and subdued in comparison. Plus, it presented another side of the Enclave as well.

I want to add my bit about companions and the Kings too.

With the exception of Sunny (who was a bit abrupt and sufferd from "the tutorial npc companion!!!" syndrome), all of the companions that I have met (temp or perm) were acceptable and believable. The perm. companions all had their realistic histories and had nice detailed quests and banter. They even managed to make ED-E and Rex feel enjoyable companions.

Except Legion, all the factions felt well done. (The Legion was actually very realistically done. However the fact that you were basically travelling trough the no mans' land between NCR and CL, and the total alienness of their ideology (to us modern non military people) made them feel not quite right. We can all imagine what kind of hole a bureaucratic, "trade house" dominated corrupt government would be like so not seeing settled NCR towns wasn't much of a problem. Maybe if we could have traveled to some of the more settled CL towns, we might have seen a better balanced picture of them instead of the maniac machete+leather slaver horde...

On this vein The Kings also need a special mention; on paper they seem to be among the stupidest and/or most unrelated ideas in fallout-world but thanks to their extremely nice execution, they are a very enjoyable and seamlessly fitting addition to the world. (Or maybe I like them for the same reasion I liked the followers in the first game...)

Arguably speaking, I think the Kings have it better than the gamblers in Vegas. I mean, sure, they're in the down-and-outs, but they're also setting up a society with connections to the outside world and are looking after the less fortunate of their citizens.

I posit that, because of this, Freeside will grow at a faster rate than New Vegas.

the thing is the kings in the fallout setting make more sense to me then Mr House and his 3 families ever will simply cause the kings do not build so much on "casinos" which is an idea I never really liked that much anyway. Not that I have a problem with 1 or 2 casinos. But there are like 4 of them if you count the atomic wrangler as well.

Don't forget Vicki and Vance!
