The old logo of the United States Civil Defense has been retired after 67 years. Well-known to Americans old enough to remember the Cold War and nuclear arms race, this symbol still appears in old fallout shelters and in the title image of a certain post-apocalyptic fan site.

The symbol was designed in 1939 by Charles T. Coiner of the N.W. Ayer advertising agency. It was proclaimed outdated in 1972 and promptly replaced (and by "promptly" we mean 34 years later) with something that looks like the logo of a bus company.

Thanks, Chris Taylor (yes, *that* Chris Taylor).

hi there ! long (Very long) time reader - i work as a graphic designer and i just had to create a user to say:

what a complete and utter piece of shit the new logo is - from all povs - i'm sorry to see something that was virtually perfect get slaughtered - my bet is that civil defense just wanted to get some money for themselves so they overpaid some deusch bag who threw in a swush and a few stars - (i cant even tell the damn thing apart from anythin - tis like american generic bs) and probably got part of the profit (cd).

what utter shit.

“We now have a new symbol of what our profession is all about,” Mr. Goodman said.
- myea throwing away tax dollars and doin nuthin

hi again everyone. much respect for keeping this thing going for so long.

you'll be glad to hear Belgistan does not want to partake in this moronic business & is still using the following:

yeah, well, it's not meant to be "nice". when civil defense is somewhere, it's not to be "nice".

to catch a person's eye in this day and age, you need either a welknown logo, or a special one. i guess it qualifies as both. it's unlikely to see some random corporation ever using that logo in roughly similar colors, isn't it?

above all a logo is to be recognised & thisone is usually in a dark blue truck with a white stripe, hence pretty dang recognisable isn't it?
sure, it's no red cross or a crescent moon, but still. it gets the job done. it's no fantasy with swooshes, catch phrases & twinkly stars!

Actually, for some reason that logo bring Soylent Green crowd control scenes to mind.

So I guess it fits.

Polakistania uses the same, but in an inverted colour scheme.

Must have to do with West-East polarity...

No, basically Belgian Civil Defence == Polish Devil Cipens

Also, I love Jebus too... INVERTED!

Greece is using the same emblem as Belgium. Might be an EU-related thing or something.

The "CD" emblem might be adopted by those people who pirate CDs. It's the perfect cover for their "businesses".

Almost all are like that, it's a masonic thing (not kidding).

For the rest I agree with radnan, and I salute Chris Taylor and his immense coolness 8)

as much as i'd love to be involved in a conspiracy involving all countries around the world, i must reluctantly admit that i am not.

as for my ties to the masons, that's come up before hasnt it?

Civil Defense triangle lives on in the logo of the Civil Air Patrol. (Circle with triangle and a propeller inside) Now I think nobody will know the two are related.
