Creating items

First time out of the vault
Hey folks.

Now, before you yell at me ive looked for tutorials but have not found any for just creating items.

Well, ive tried to make a new chem.
Created a consumeable in the editor, named it, assigned a sprite and set the effect(to my best knowledge). Saved it in the folder which the editor uses when i want to place a drug entity on a map.

Then i openend the next mission map im about to visist and placed the item. But it does not show up. Neither when placed on the floor, or when added to a container.
This probably should be a simple task, but i still cant get it to work. :D

Help?

Sometimes it may be a good idea to copy one of existent drugs and exptriment with them - that way you won't mess with options, as most of them set already.

Second, when placing entity in Editor, make sure you are on same level, on which you want to place item. If you scroll too much up or down, you won't be able to place entity in desired location.

Hmmm..i tired that but the item also does not appear in the container.

See, i just copied a stimpak and altered the effect, should seem simple. And i did not visit the map before, in that save file.
Somehow i feel i cant alter the maps in a running campaign...ugh

Where do you have the game installed? If you've installed in program files, since you are using Vista it's probably down to the user account control saving your changes elsewhere.

If you haven't installed to program files or the files are in the correct place, are you importing your changes back into the bos. files? If so don't, the game will read unpack files before it reads the archives. And if there's an older version unpacked it's ignoring your changes or your path in the archive file is incorrect/corrupted.

Hmmm okay, lets break this down.

Installed in a custom directory as i am aware of the fuckery that happens with some games in program files.

Ive extracted most of the .bos files, except for the sounds and sprites. Ive also kept the .bos files in the folder.

In the editor, i open a chem from the "entities_0 dir". I modify it, save it as a new thing in the "entites" folder. For some reason the level editor will only import files from here, and not from the other much biger folder.

Then in the level editor i open the next mission map in one of the "mis-core" folders and look for a conatiner. Then i add the item to the inventory of the container, and save the changes.

No effect in game. Hope this is understandable :D

Edit: One thing though, i patched my game midway after i already had extracted some .bos files. Maybe the patch fucked the folder structure?

When you talk about entities_0 directory and mis-core folders is that what they are called once you've extracted them? Everything should be extracted to the core directory, e.g. c:\games\Fallout Tactics\core\campaigns\missions\core.

Oh thats something to know!
I just extracted them in the c:\games\Fallout Tactics\core folder.

Kind of, leave them where you found em.
Well ill delete the folders and unpack the .bos files again into
games\Fallout Tactics\core\campaigns\missions\core
and see if that was the problem.

But to clarify, put the folders to the core directory or just the files/folders in the .bos? So that i dont have a named folder with the .bos description containing the files.
Ahrg, i feel stupid while writing this.
:D

thx for your help!

What program are you using to extract them? The .bos files are just renamed zip folders, and if you extract them to the core folder and keep the directory structure intact all the files should go in the right place.

Alternatively, download and use the booster program and it'll extract everything for you, just remember to repatch afterwards.

Im using 7zip to extract the files.
It creates a folder with the same name as the .bos file which then contains the files.

But if i undertsand you right, i should put the files into the core directory without a folder named like the .bos file?

Yes they should be directly under the core folder, so c:\games\Fallout Tactics\core\entities not c:\games\Fallout Tactics\core\entities_0.bos\entities. If all else fails you can rename the .bos to .zip and open them in explorer and just extract all to the core folder.
