Dark Souls

First time out of the vault
So, anyone here playing Dark Souls ?

I know the game, as its predecessor, is rather different from the Fallout games, but they are definitely worth a try if you are bored with modern RPGs.

The difficulty may be quite annoying at first but the game is actually not that hard once you get the grip of it. It is all about learning techniques for each ennemy, playing carefully and enjoy exploring the world. In the first two senses it is very close to my other favorite genre : shoot them ups.

Multiplayer is also very fresh and good and may help a lot to progress through the main story.

Anyway, if interested, feel free to share your experience with the game here.

I am almost near the end. Just gotta beat Tomb of the Giants and then it's a straight shot to the last area. Easier said than done, with all the skeleton archers, skeleton dogs, skeleton babies, and necromancers that enjoy setting up shop in pitch black areas near cliffs.

I've beaten the game twice.

Took me a little bit to get used to it at first, but having been used to Demon's Souls, I started parrying the shit out of monsters.

Of course, I had to learn several lessons the hard way, like not going into Darkroot Garden's forest in human form.

I'm in basically the same spot. I recently finished the Tomb of Giants, but haven't gone into the last area yet. I've heard about how much the difficulty spikes in NG+ and so I'm out grinding for titanite chunks for my Elite Knight armor set and Lightning Iaito. Then there's the NPC events like Big Hat Logan in the Duke's Archives that I'm doing; along with kindling all the bonfires three times which requires me to grind for humanity.

What is the dialog/skillcheck system in this game like? Are there any companions etc? How it goes on the C&C department?

Dialog is almost inexistent, your character does not speak and NPCs are mainly here to help you understand the world that surrounds you. You can skip almost all their dialogue and just use them to buy stuffs if you like.

Skillcheck are inexistant also. Your skills are mainly used to determine how well you will do during fightings.

Companions ? Well, there are, other players around the globe ! Basically here is how multiplayer works :
- There are two forms for your character : hollow form, human form
- When in hollow form, you can set a sign on the ground
- When in human form, you can see the signs set by players in hollow and summon them to your world for them to help you.
- Also note that, when human, you may also invade another human in order to kill him (baaad)

Finally, for the C&C thing ... well I dont know what C&C means !

As you see, this game is really nothing like you have seen in RPGs terms. However, it is definitely worth a try if you like challenge.

Hm, I was hoping for some more roleplay elements since I read lots of people praising the game on RPG boards. :| "C&C" - Choices&Consequences. With companions I meant real companions, not some multiplayer guy ruining my enjoyment.

I've watched some gameplay on youtube now and it looks like ye' olde' jRPG to me.. I think I will pass. :/

It is definitely not ye' olde' jRPGs. Fight system is different, storytelling is different, atmosphere is different, difficulty exists (maybe the most important appeal to me, dying does happen, a lot, and does have consequences, amazing !).

It is true that it does not have skillcheck, barter, C&C (now I know the words) and other Fallout stuff.
As for the RPGs elements, some are here : levelling, boosting stats, exploring to find better weapons, upgrading weapons, armors and spells, unique items.

As much as Fallout created its own style of RPGs, I think Demon's Souls and Dark Souls also created theirs.

You can find Demon's Souls for cheap now (15 euros in France), maybe a good starter if you fear to be disappointed by the game.

It's really more of a Dungeon Crawler than an RPG.

I mean, there is a sense of choice and consequence in the covenant system, but it's really more a case of 'Who is actively trying to kill you?' than anything else.

I beat it. I fucking beat it. AHAHAHAHA I CAN GET BACK TO MY LIFE! FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST, THANK GOD ALMIGHTY, I AM FREE AT LAS-

Oh, New Game+ huh? Well, I guess I can play for a little bit...

You're right about the Dungeon Crawler aspect of the game.

I also see a C&C aspect in the fact that, if you choose to hit ennemies at the wrong time, well, you're just dead.

God this game is hard.

I cant really understand all of it without sometimes reading a guide or such, but I also fell like this breaks the fun.

I am about to deal with Queelag's Witch and stuck with Drake Sword which I find now is not as usefull as in early game. Which weapon upgrade path did you guys choose ? I dont want to loose ores on useless upgrades...

Hehehe! This reminds of the time when I started playing Demon's Souls. :D

Give it some more time and you're gonna love it. Haven't played it yet though, but I can totaly imagine that it has a lot in common with Demon's Souls.

Well, until you get access to Fire and Lightning upgrades, either get a Divine upgrade at Andrei or a Magic upgrade at Rickert.

Raw upgrades aren't very good and you won't have access to Fire and Lightning until you reach The Catacombs and Anor Londo.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll go for Divine since I understood that will help a lot in the catacomb. By the way, do divine also kills those infinitely respawning mosquitos in the swamp down blighttown ?

Also I dont have access to Rickert yet, I dont even know where he is located...

EDIT : may I add that I love that avatar of yours ? Any place where I cant get those funny souls picture ?

Unfortunately, the mosquitoes will just keep spawning, that's just how it is.

However, you can usually outrun them with no real problems if you find the Rusted Iron ring.

Also, if there's anything positive to be said about 4Chan, it's that you can find funny pictures there on occasion.

And to find Rickert, when you head back to Firelink shrine, there's a small staircase hidden on the lower level where the Fire Keeper is. You follow those stairs down to an elevator, which leads to the New Londo Ruins. From there, look to your right, there should be one of those zombies lying down on the edge of a cliff, head past him and you'll see a staircase down to a dead end.

Rickert is sitting in a small cell set in the wall by the end of that path. He can teach a few spells as well as ascend weapons onto the magic weapon route.

There is a way out, on the far side, near the three Cat-Bear-Pigs, as I call them.

Thanks for Rickert location. I cant believe I did explore that area a lot of times without finding him. Now I'm going to ascend and beat that Chaos Witch out of my way.
