Fallout 2: Choosing Your Companions

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
Fallout 2 has a multitude of npc's to join your quest, but according to what I've read, not all of them are powerful or good enough to take through the whole game. According to the Nearly Ultimate Fallout 2 guide, the best three companions are Sulik, Vic, and Cassidy. Usually, when I play, those are the three I recruit no matter what I specialize in.

I know that Sulik works best in melee because of his higher strength and endurance, Vic is best at long range combat, and Cassidy is the best sharpshooter you can recruit. When playing with higher charisma, I've also recruited Marcus and had him using the Pulse Rifle as it's the best weapon for him. I've also a couple of times recruited Goris. I haven't bothered with any of the other NPC's yet.

I was wondering what suggestions everybody else has for choosing their party and how they progress with their chosen npc's including what weapons they use.

I start with high Charisma (you need it for the Porn Star perk too, huehuehue) and take extra companion perks.
That way I can recruit Sulik, Vic, Cassidy (three must-haves), Goris, and Marcus. This is what I'd like to call "The Dream Team".
I recruit Myron whenever I need him to whip me up some Stimps or watch him getting killed or turned into goo. Heheheh.

Here's some advice: give Sulik and other close range companions your leftover power armor. They'll need it since they endure a lot of damage. You needn't worry about Vic or Marcus too much.

I go with Sulik, Vic, Cassidy when I make the 'Ranger Squad', all armed with .44 mag/.223 pistol/revolver and go to to town on people.

I always give power armor to Vic, Cassidy, and Sulik, hardening two of them with help from Crockett.

I have the following ideas about certain builds and what companions they acquire:

Small Guns: Sulik, Vic, Cassidy, and Marcus. Maybe Goris as well. Depending on which Gauss weapon I use endgame, Vic will use the other. Which Gauss weapon I use depends on whether or not I take Fast Shot as the Gauss Rifle deals better damage with targeted shots and the Gauss Pistol uses less AP.

Energy Weapons: Sulik, Vic, and Cassidy. Whether or not I recruit Marcus depends on whether or not my endgame weapon is the Pulse Rifle. If I take Fast Shot, I use the Gatling Laser and recruit Marcus, giving him the Pulse Rifle, Cassidy uses the Gauss Pistol since I'll be using the Pulse Pistol to conserve ammo, at least until I can get my hands on the Alien Blaster.. If not, I use the Pulse Rifle and not bother recruiting Marcus. If I can, I'll also get Goris.

Big Guns: Same as Small Guns, though Vic will use the Gauss Rifle endgame. I use the Gauss Pistol against weaker enemies to conserve Ammo with the Bozar as my weapon of Choice.

Melee: Sulik, Cassidy, Vic, and Marcus. Sulik uses the .223 Pistol. Won't bother recruiting Goris as I have melee range covered by myself.

Honestly, your party build is entirely on point. Vic, Cassidy, Sulik, Marcus and Goris are the most useful companions. Don't bother with The Dogs, because you can never upgrade there gear, Lenny because he's a hassle to keep around and Davin and Miria are intentionally bad

If you have a high charisma, maybe consider taking on Myron, because he has some very basic combat ability, but his main thing is crafting items for you.
Vic is best at long range combat
Honestly, Vic is only somewhat useful as a combat companion, and mostly gets in the way.

If however, you need to perform a Repair check, Vic is brilliant to have along because he can help you with it.

Cassidy and Sulik are good, no matter when, while Lenny and Vic are good, but need time to reach their potential. K-9, Robodog, Dogmeat and Goris are OK at melee, but by the time you get them, they are already useless. The pariah dog, Miria and Davin are purposly bad, and Myron isn't much better. Marcus is very situational. Not sure how Skynet and the three EPA companions really fit. By the time you get them, you already have Cassidy, Sulik, Vic and Lenny, plus Marcus or Myron.

I found Skynet to be rather good. I always give Skynet the sniper rifle as it tends to do fairly well with it.

yeah, Sulik, Vic and Cassidy. Sometimes Marcus.

I've never used others, especially Skynet, which is a lot of work to get.
