Kotaku reports that Fallout 3 has been banned in Australia.
As shown on the Classification Board's website, Fallout 3 was refused classification, being given the RC rating. This means that Fallout 3 is banned for sale, hire, public exhibition <s>or importation</s> into Australia, carrying a maximum fine of $275,000 and/or 10 years jail.

EDIT: it appear we were wrong on the count of importation, ref here.

For fuck's sake.

This pisses me off.

I'm not about to stop you but I do ask that you please not use this thread to say that Australia is now better off for not having to play a substandard sequel.

Instead perhaps use it to voice how inappropriate censorship can be at times.

Well there's always importing, which shouldn't be a problem. I'm also sure if you're getting the PC version there should be a way to add in the censored material. It is a huge pain in the ass, but it won't be impossible for anyone to play it.

In germany it will get at least a +18 Rating and I bet, it will be banned too. But because of the gore and not because of drugs...

/Edit: But it should be easy to import it from switzerland or austria. :>

It states in the newspost that it's banned from importation to.

Shattering news for all 10 people who would buy it there.

What's this supposed to mean?

What does it seem like it could mean? :o I don't know. It could be a clever metaphor, or a childish stab at an obscure inside joke that 10 people in the world would appreciate. It could be anything you want. I like to think my previous post is left open to interpretation to inspire a state of deep contemplation.

Then again, i might be just talking bollocks and stupidly snarking while wiping the drool off my commie mouth.

Or not.

A fine answer if the question was "What are some ways I could perceive the true meaning of this comment?"

Not good news for the Australian games industry or freedom of speech, but I'm absolutely over-fucking-joyed that this is going to hit Bethesda where it really hurts: Their wallet.
They're going to have to spend money editing the content, then they're going to have to pay to re-submit the game for classification.
The more money these charlatans are forced to waste, the better in my opinion.

Regardless of if F3 will be worth playing or not (if you take it as a standalone game), this decision approves how dumbed down und hypocrite todays society actually is. No, it's not a problem of the australians, I'm living in Austria, and I'm very glad we haven't got the same laws as in germany (at least till now), where brutality in games is treated as an deadly sin...Of course, it's not like art of human mankind would have treated this topic another way past the last "few" thousand years. But who cares, in a world where children are being raped, people sell their organs, rich guys pay huge money for fucking snuff porn and so on, controverse topics in games are the most displeasing.
The most sad thing about this whole shit is, that I already thought that BS was right with their attitude towards children, because - face it - our bullshit society of today wouldn't allow such a great title as Fallout1/2 again ... at least not in the relevant market areas. Sad truth, but hey, nothing new, we're living in a fascistic world.

And RobOverall, stop your national pride and start thinking about his post, it wasn't nationalism, it was a simple sarcastic joke about the great fanbase of Fallout 3 in Australia, I would rather see it as compliment considering the percentage of BS-fanboys worldwide.

WHooa, this really sucks. In so far as it shows that Beth made the "right choice" not to include graphical child-killing.

I think on a deeper level the problem in the game-biz of watering-down and dumbing-down is because games now cost a lot more to produce. Greater financial risk means less risk can be taken with content and possible PR-disasters.

In that case, we should be very glad that we have modding-communities.

Also I think someone should set up a web-campaign with a petition for the F3 editor.
