Fallout & Fallout 2 LCD Sprite issue, PLEASE HELP !

First time out of the vault
Greetings,

I am trying to play fallout 1 and 2 on a laptop that has an 8 MB ATI Mobility Rage video card. The game runs fine however from the opening menu throughout the game I get thi lines (like static) that run up and down the screen, they are annoying. People say it is because the game is "sprite" based (graphically) . Is there a work-around or fix for this ? I tried different drivers but it did not help. Has anybody else tried to play this game a machine with a similar video card? Please Help!

Thank you!

it being sprite based has nothing to do with anything... I never heard such an obcsure reason to explain a bug.

How would you describe those lines? 1 black line from to to bootom every few pixels? Can you take a snapshot or something? (I would guess that a screenshot (F12) wouldn't display the problem though).

Are you using an LCD panel monitor? LCDs are designed to run at one reslution, when they run at different resolutions the pixels tend to look funny espeacily when you run them lower. As Fallout will be running at a lower Resolution that could be why, try using a normal monitor

Yeah that was my though however I don't quite grasp what he means by lines... When the LCD performs scaling it should fill the gaps...

Sometimes there are options to tell the screen NOT to scale (usually inthe BIOS).

Technically speaking, your computer is a plastic box with small busy creatures in it. If your computer is gremlin-based it can cause compatibility issues because they don't get along with the sprites. You might want to try out gnomes instead. Fairies are quick, but erratic. If you don't know which ones your computer runs on, contact your local dealer.

Greetings,

Thank you for your replies!

I am running the Game on an IBM ThinkPad Laptop (A22m). There are no video based options in the Bios other than AGP/PCI choice, Screen brightness and screen stretch (I turned it off and on and it did not help the game). There are no other options like AGP Aperture set for example (I know that it is 64 MB though, through SISandra). Imagine a TV hooked up to an antenna that has poor reception; you get this static line running up and down the screen. In my case they are not continuous line, just little static thin lines the roll from the top to the bottom. I checked my hardware and it is fine. I also tried other sprite based games and they work fine too. It is just fallout. The video card is a ATI RAGE (probably 64) Mobility or M1. Maybe it is because of windows XP (although I have a windows XP driver from IBM that is 4 month old) This was a very popular video card for laptops about 3 years a go, has anybody a Laptop or knows somebody with such a video card in a laptop that runs this game fine ? Acer, HP, Gateway and fujitsu had many models with this video card.

Thank you very much!

try changing you screen resolution down to 640 by 480 and see if it looks funny or blocky in windows, if it does it will be due to your LCD panel being unable to run at lower resolutions. Like I say plug in an exteranal monitor (the old fasioned type with a tube). The other "sprite" based games you played, did they lower the resolution like fallout? or did they run at the windows resolution?

Also, you might like to try and fiddle with the shortcut compatibility options when running the game. Pretty much enable every options there and see if it helps. The main one I'm thinking of though is "Run in 640x480" option.

Greetings,

I have tried the Windows compatability settings (256 colors, win 95,me and the 640 by 480 option) and still the same I tried Starcraft (not 100% sure it is srpite based) Diablo 1 and 2 , Warcraft 2 and they work fine. It probably is a video card issue or maybe a game bug, the idea was to fix it by going in the regysty or changing the game's config file (if there is one) however I do not know what causes it.

Thank you very much !
