fallout gameplay questions

First time out of the vault
hey, i just started playing fallout yesterday and its a LOT of fun; i have 2 questions though:

1. I got Ian to follow me and he was a bunch of help when i explored vault 15, but when we went to the bandit village south of shady sands, i talked to the guy in the first tent and as soon as i left, the guy chased us out and Ian shot and killed him! we started fighting the entire bandit village when Ian was killed and i ran away. did all this happen because i had my gun out when i talked to the guy?

2. i decided to keep playing once Ian died, but when i went to junktown and talked to Killian Darkwater, then sold him 2 of the bandit's armor vests, this guy from Gizmo came in and started shooting! i couldn't tell if he was shooting at me or Killian (i was between him and killian), but when killian shot back he hit me, and then all the guards started shooting at me! i tried to run but i got killed, and now i might as well start over from when Ian was still alive...why did they all start shooting at me?

thanks for any tips, the freedom in this game is SO cool (i was laughing my ass off as i stole everything the bandit's were wairing as Ian kept shooting at the rest of them)

Yes. A bit of a hint here, people don't generally like you waving a weapon around. The more civilized places certainly don't, but even raiders feel threatened if you don't put your piece away.

That was a bit of a screw-up. It happens sometimes that when someone hits you accidentally it turns everyone hostile. Doesn't happen often, though, just bad luck.

*spoiler*

The fight is in fact between the guy and Killian. You can choose either side and help out, but Killian's the good guy here, so keep that in mind.

I'd reload to when Ian was alive if I was you. And keep your gun holstered unless you intend to use it. Ian's weapons don't matter

thanks for the answers! i was able to restart, get ian, etc. now i have a new question:

why do people's messages come in different colors? blue, green, yellow, etc. does it mean anything or is it just for variety?

Well colors usually signify what reaction you are getting. White is good and red text means they are mad or getting mad. I am not sure whether the other colors carry significance, but I think they are just for variety.

thanks for the answer! new question:

if i tell someone i don't want them to follow me anymore, can i get them to follow me again just by going back to where i left them? do they stay there, or will they disappear?

The NPC will stay where you told them to stay...unless of course the map undergoes a radical change and requires an entirely new map. I cannot remember if this happens in Fallout 1 but it does occur in Fallout 2.

So, to answer your question, an NPC will remain where you left them. 8)

thanks for the quick response! new question! (really just an extra part of my last one)

is there any way i can give them weapons, armor, or just more specific orders (like 'hold this position')?

Uh...man, it has been so long since I played Fallout 1. I have been hacking away at Fallout 2 so much I honestly cannot recall the NPC system in Fallout 1. There are no true "hold this position" commands though, just stay here until I get back.

As for weapons and such I think, if I remember correctly, you are able to enter some type of NPC setup screen. (or perhaps this is only in Fallout 2) Either way, if you barter and give them a rifle (or heck even use steal and place one on them) they should use that gun in battle. I do recall that the Fallout 1 NPC system is quite limited in what you can do. This was greatly improved in Fallout 2. Just experiment or wait until someone else here responds who remembers more.

Looks like I need to play Fallout 1 again.... 8) :D

You can give them a weapon which they'll use when you tell them to "use their best weapon". The settings for this are a bit iffy, there's an NPC that'll choose throwing knives over any weapon, so it's a good idea to use barter to make sure they have only one weapon

Armor; no

Specific orders; no. You can only specify the distance they should keep. You should keep everyone at long distance, else they're bound to corner you somewhere which means you can't move anymore

cool, thanks for the tips!

new question:
is there any way i can figure out exactly what the various skills are used for? for example, one of my main skills is "outdoorsman," but i have no idea what this skill does in the game...

I highly recommend reading this guide. Don't read about the areas you have not been to yet..don't want to spoil your fun. 8)

Don't read the guide, not until you've played the game through at least once. Read your manual, there should be a copy in pdf format on your cd. That'll cover the skills etc.

It's too tempting to read all the guide, don't you find? I think it's better to ask specific questions, as long as you've read the manual first.

that was my exact line of thought! thanks for the heads-up about the manual!

Absolutely nothing. Oh wait. Once or twice in the game it'll save you from losing a HP or two.

You're so boned. :)

Don't worry, my first character also tagged Outdorsman.

Also, you avoid more random encounters if you have high outdoorsman, which is actually bad thing for xp gaining.

In Fallout 1? You don't have the yesno selection screen there...

Did Outdoorsman lower the number of encounters altogether?

Also, there are some "special" encounters, but they're more dependant on Luck.

thanks for the info! new question:

right now i'm really annoyed, because I've been stuck in this military base/prison for the ultramutants and i can't figure out how i'm supposed to escape! the only elevator that i could imagine could get me out is "out of order;" i don't see any other exits!

Yes. No choice. You just had less encounters. It also reduces the "you found no water, you suffer 1 HP"-encounters a lot.

It might up the chance of special encounters, but I doubt it, they're pure luck-dependant. Very useless, outdoorsman

You'll have a lot of trouble getting out if you entered at a low level.

The lower levels of the base have two lifts, one of which is out of order. There's another lift around there, just look around. It might be behind a forcefield. You can walk through red forcefields, you'll just get some damage, you have to use repair to lower the yellow forcefields.

i have been able to go pretty much anywhere on the 3rd and 4th levels (anywhere without ultramutants, that is). i've tried blowing up the base, turning on the alarm, i tried sneaking around to see if there were any items i needed, i tried pretending i was one of the children of the cathedral, i've tried everything! if i have to kill all those guys to escape, though, there's no way i'll be able to...

edit: right now i'm at level 6

Level 6? That is a bit low to end up there, but you should be able to bolt, at least.

The working elevator on level 3 is on the north-west end, break through the force field in front of it and you should be able to go up to level 1.

You might have to sneak/run past some mutants, though
