Fallout trilogy re-released on Steam

WorstUsernameEver

But best title ever!
Bethesda just re-released Fallout trilogy on Steam. The single games are available for $9.99/€9.99 while the entire trilogy costs $19.99/€19.99 in total.

I don't have the Fallout trilogy on Steam, but Infinitron on the RPG Codex offered a list of the changes made by Bethesda. Contrary to some people's fears, Bethesda barely touched the games at all, and their changes can be summed up to some updated legal text (it now mentions Bethesda Softworks) and the integration of the high-resolution mods for Fallout 1 and 2 (though it's possible to play the games completely vanilla in "classic mode"). Also of note: the games now make use of Steam's cloud save functionality.

It remains to be seen whether the games will be re-released on GOG or any other other platform that doesn't sell Steam keys.

According to pseudonymous, they added the High Resolution Patch version 4.1.8 by “Mash” Matt Wells for Fallout 1.

They also added Sfall. I hope they asked the modders' permission this time!

Any news on whether the new Steam version is killap-compatible?

Hey, they release a new update that just broke the unoffical patch and restoration project. I tried reinstalling them but the game just crashes and I cant load my save games without them neither.

Damn, last time I've played fallout 2 was in 2007, decided some days ago to replay it and after 30hrs this happens. I'm really sad.

I've seen some reports of my UP and RP not working after this. Seems odd that this would happen.

I do own the collection on Steam, so I'll take a look and see if things really are broken.

@Ravagna. You say reinstalling didn't help? Is it that old saves are broken and crash or that launching the game with the UP/RP just crashes?

I wasnt very clear there.

When I tried to play after the update from steam, I was able to launch the game, but couldnt load any save. Then I tried reinstalling the restoration project, that comes with the patch already (right?), but after this I cant launch the game anymore, it gives one of those memory errors.

Also, bethesda included a new launcher to the game, you have to hit play before it will open the game, like one of those in fo3 and nv.

UP/RP should overwrite the main exe during their installation, you might be able to start the game by executing fallou2.exe manually.

Already tried that, no luck.
Hmm, if I had Steam version I would try to copy the two main DATs & music ACM files to build a manual humongous installation (and using EXE from old official 1.02d patch rather than Steam one), then installing UP or RP on it.

Okay, I got around to testing.

After Steam updated Fallout 2, I reinstalled the RP and I can load the game to the main menu just fine - either loading the classic or HD version via the new launcher. I see my version info at the bottom right of the menu. I then can start a new game just fine and I see the rock behind Klint. Lastly, I attempted to load a save game made before the Steam update and it loaded just fine. No crashes or odd behavior in any of these cases.

I quit the game and then Steam started syncing. I'm not sure if that's because it was adding my saving game to the cloud or overwriting the RP files with the original Steam stuff. After the sync was done, I did go back into the game and everything still worked normally.

I'm not sure what to tell you, @Ravagna Reinstalling should work, at least it did for me. Where is the RP installer trying to install to? Should be something along the lines of: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 2

Might also be worth right clicking the F2 icon in your Steam library, choosing "Properties", "Updates" and then under the automatic update section setting it to "Do not automatically update" After that, reinstall the RP.

Yes. Although under a different name, used to be "Fallout Collection" (?), now the admittedly better "Fallout Classic Collection".

Over all the re-release isn't so bad. They didn't remove the Interplay logo etc as people feared. I have warmed to cloud saving in general. Hopefully restoration patch issues will be sorted out.

That's weird. But I did installed the patch in the right folder with the manual installer, I will try using the automatic installer. I did deactivated the automatic update in the same day the patch was released, but it downloaded the patch when I tried launching the game, thats when the nightmare begun.

I'm already downloading the automatic installer. I will come back later to say if it worked.

I cant direct my post to someone, it says post denied if I do.

It appears that Fallout 1 is still censored in Europa, but not Fallout 2. (didn't see children in the 1st one)

The Bethesda pictures & credits only appear on the launcher, not the game itself, that keep its original credits.

The credits for the modders are on the Read Me of Sfall and High-Res.
High-res : "Mash" Matt Wells, with Continuum, Pixote, gvx, Helios, Weak-ling, Nirran & Drobovik, from "No Mutant Allowed" (yes, NMA credited in games sold by Beth. Maybe the NMA bar in Fallout isn't a dream)
Sfall : Timeslip, with Ravachol, Noid, Glovz, Dream, Ray/Alray, KLIMaka, Mash, Helios, Haenlomal.

PS: Currently, Steam is needed to install the games, but not to launch them. So you still can create copies of your folder to use additionnal mods.

This made me chuckle. :p
