Fallout2 restoration save game issue

Bladerunner222

First time out of the vault
Hi everyone,

I installed the Fallout 2 Restoration mod and for some reason it can not save a game. Is this a known issue with a fix or should I just try a reinstall.

Take care,
Bladerunner222

Well, since you don't mention what system you're using I'll just have to take a guess. Mmm Maybe Windows 7?

It's probably the stupid UAC messing with things.

Try to install the game somewhere else than in Program files. I think I saw that fixing it for someone earlier.

Thanks for the reply. I'm currently using vista. Fallout2 is located in an E drive so it far away for the program files directory. I'll just run a fresh reinstall and see if that solves the issue.

Hi,

I've had the exact same issue, except im running under XP SP3.
I tried to install F2 RP2 on different locations (c:, Program Files, external HD), it didn't work.
Before doing anything else, I've reinstalled a vanilla version of F2 and the save option worked. Same thing with F2 + RP1.2.

I've checked the forum but didn't find much... except something about
cleaning the registry of any fallout entries.
Didn't work much for me either (but I may have left something...)

In the end, I ve done a complete reinstall of the OS... and it worked !
It's a little bit harsh but it's definitely worth the effort.

I still think it has something to do with the registry so before reinstalling Vista you might want to clear your registry properly.

Don't know if it will help...

Hi there,

Thats a good idea however, I am not going to reinstall my OS for FO2. In the mean time I'll look for a work around. FO1, FO2 and FO2 shattered Destiny save game function works just fine.

I also did try to run it as an admin with the winxp compatability set. That also did not work.

go around and check files/folders if they are read-only
go around and check files/folders and give access to write/read/modify (Full Access) to EVERYONE

Bladerunner222, maybe you could try to use CCleaner to clean out the registry. It has a backup feature so it shouldn't hurt to try.

This bug also happens to me. No saving for now :/

I am using Vista 32b and the game is not installed into Program Files and I did use humongous install.

Already tried everything I could think of, including remove/reinstall FO2/RP, problem persists.

As you say it seems to have something to do with registry. I don't want to do a full OS reinstall though.

Try to do a manual cleaning of your registry : delete all Fallout/Interplay/Black Isle references and reinstall F2+ RP2.0.
Hopefully, this should work.

Tried this yesterday. Didn't work. Also tried the read-only thing described above (didn't notice it earlier). No effect. :|

Fallout2 restoration project 2 save game issue

I also had this problem. It didn't look OS specific or registry related, so I tried using a humongous installation of Fallout 2, and that fixed it.

Well, do you have a humongous installation of Fallout 2? It is necessary.

Yes, I have humongous installation. Also I'd try manual install, also set full access to all files.

No effect, still "unable to save game"

Btw, RP 1.2 work fine and let save game.

Any idea whats wrong?

Hi there!

I had the same problem; when i run the game under windows XP SP2 i cannot save (unable to save game error), someone here in this forum gave me the clue to solve this: the master.dat may be corrupted.

I think that the game installation corrupts this archive in this OS for some reason i dont know (or maybe i'm worng, who knows). To prove this I install the game in a virtual PC with windows 95 as OS, then I replace the master.dat created in this installation with the other master.dat in the host OS, windows XP SP2 (both archives only diference in only 1KB) and then the save function worked again.

I have not tested the wole game before that (im still in arroyo) but works 'till now.

Here is, step by step, what you have to do if you wanna try this solution:

1. Install Microsoft virtual PC
2. Install windows 95 (dunno if 98 works but most likely)
3. Install virtual machine additions in this virtual pc
4. Create a shared folder with the host (seach in the program help for this last two steps y you feel lost)
5. Install Fallout 2 in the virtual machine
6. Install RP2 (download, place it in the shared folder and then install) in the virtual machine.
7. I installed update 2.02d but i think it doesn't matter.
8. Try to run the game, create new game and save (not required i think).
9. If saved succesfully, thats OK. Copy the master.dat to the shared folder.
10.In the host, copy the master.dat from the shared folder to the FO2 folder (replace it or move it).
11. try to save a game.

I hope it works for everyone, good luck.

(PS:sry bout my english
:P )

Confirmed. After copy master.dat from working version - save work fine.

During Virtual PC install it says I'm not running a supported OS version. Which is 32b Vista (home premium).

So if this actually works, then it would be really, really great if someone could put a working RP master.dat into rapidshare or a torrent site or similar. 8-)

Here is how I patch my MASTER.DAT under Debian with wine. From RP Manual install copy batch_work folder.Lets say we put it in /home/user/Desktop.Copy in it your MASTER.DAT file and open some terminal emulator(like gnome-terminal).Go to the batch_work folder($ cd /home/user/Desktop/batch_work) and run this command :
Code:
$ wineconsole cmd
Now we have new window. In it write or copy/paste :
1)
Code:
START dat2 d master proto\CRITTERS\00000502.pro proto\CRITTERS\00000503.pro proto\CRITTERS\00000504.pro
This command Remove Kitsune, Dex, Cat Jules protos from the master.dat in the event the RP was already installed - prevent dups.If patching "fresh" one it size must remain unchanged.
2)
Code:
START dat2 a master proto\CRITTERS\00000502.pro proto\CRITTERS\00000503.pro proto\CRITTERS\00000504.pro
Add Kitsune, Dex, Cat Jules protos to the master.dat.File must be bigger now.
3)
Code:
START dat2 d master proto\CRITTERS\00000089.pro proto\CRITTERS\00000079.pro
Remove bad Cassidy proto and bad Skynet proto from master.dat.Now little smaller.
4)
Code:
START dat2 a master proto\CRITTERS\00000089.pro proto\CRITTERS\00000079.pro
Add fixed Cassidy proto and fixed Skynet proto to master.dat.Bigger...

Move your MASTER.DAT file back in to your Fallout 2 folder. And hopefully there will be no more save errors. For some reason using f2.bat or separately other .bat files do not work for me.
If os is windows nt, 2000, xp, vista or 7 you can try something similar using windows cmd.In 95, 98 or me you need to type command in run if i remember correctly.

I was a little perplexed as how to do this in windows but then I just used the cmd thingy and it worked! Thanks a lot, Mirr!

Off to play :) ->
