FOnline open test

The Russian project FOnline has been progressing well, and is holding an open test today. While most communications are in Russian (English FAQ here), the test client will have an interface in English, though dialogues will be in Russian. Despite the language barrier being a bit of a stickler, the people of FOnline would really like some non-Russians to participate in the open test. I should probably note here they could also use a hand in translating the project from Russian to English.

If you're interested, they're launching it this evening (estimated around 8 o'clock Moscow time (4 o'clock GMT), but could be earlier or later) on IRC, channel irc.forestnet.org, room fonline. Instructions on downloading the client will be given then and there, and there will (hopefully) be a few English-speakers to help translate (if anyone from NMA can help out with that, that'd also be great).

You're invited to give it a go.

Addendum: the FOnline guys have opened a forum with an English language thread about the test including a download link, as well as more threads to help install the client and ask questions.

This should facilitate trying out the game, which will run for a week.

Everyone join our IRC channel. If you join we'll try to speak english.
I remind you:
IRC server: irc.forestnet.org
channel: fonline

you're all encouraged to test Fallout online. Also please be so kind and point out any mistakes in English translation (misspelled names, grammatic/language stuff etc.). Please note that translation is in it's early stage and very little is done (right now - only NPC names and Den & Klamath NPC's description).

please, do NOT be afraid of language barriers, we have english-speaking guys in here (well, different skill levels, but nevertheless). your feedback is very important to us!

PS please test NPC's names and descriptions in the Den and Klamath! Pay special attention to NPC's names.

Added note:
the FOnline guys have opened a forum with an English language thread about the test including a download link, as well as more threads to help install the client and ask questions.

This should facilitate trying out the game, which will run for a week.

Anyone who has time on NMA: please download and give it a whirl. I don't have the time m'self, but it's certainly an interesting project to give a try

The first open FOnline(Fallout Online) test.

The first open test.

Aims of test:
1) To show on a what stage the project is. To everyone who is interested in it.
2) The search of the cheif scenario writer. The project needs in a man who will coordinate all scenario writers work, and will work out the main scenario moments.

What to begin with?
There was opened a new section in the forum, which one is totaly devoted to the test. You can express you opinion, and ask main questions about the test there. The link:
http://www.fonline.ru/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=27

The duration of an open test will last one week at a favourable coincidence.

The link for downloading the client is : http://www.fonline.ru/foclient.zip (the link might be changed)
The size of a zipped client is : 9.86 mb

If you was connecting and an error like this appeared "The wrong protocol version" Then look this page, there will be the patch you'll have to download and install.

Installing the client:
Unrar an archive in any comfortable place for you.
Run FOconfig.exe (NET Framework2.0 is necessary for it, but if it does not run, then update VCRedist). Set the pass to master.dat and critter.dat in the programm (or you just can copy these files into the folder with the unrared client). Than also look through other options (but if you have any questions about to destiny bout any of them, than look FOnline.cfg .There are a short descriptions to each one).
Copy all the files from "Fallout2\data\sound\music" from the original Fallout2 into the folder "FOnline\data\sound\music\" of FOnline. If you dont do that, there wont be any music in the game.
Run FOnline.exe
All the other things you can read in the manual which will be placed in the folder with the game client.

Recomendations:
-If you have low FPS, then decrease the value of Sleep (up to 0)
-If game is lagging from time to time, then try to turn off Logging (Logging=0)

There are many thingh which aren't realized, or realized on a half in the game. Such a moments are marked in the manual, but maybe something was missed or told not exactly. Some features of the test are:
-You can notice the increased amount of money in NPC's pockets.
-The speed of movements is increased a bit.
-You will start in Den, and you'll have a radio in the invertory.
-If you get to the place you can't get out, than just type "~toglobal" in the cantilever, and you'll be returned to the global map.

If you want to discuss the game in online, then join IRC channel #fonline, server irc.forestnet.org .

The english speaking community can start their acquaintance from this topic: http://www.fonline.ru/forum/showthread.php?t=1372

Okay, I had questions about this before, but this segment tells me the answer:

FOnline is the online modification for Fallout 2, that makes possible for players around the world to play online together. Because of original client multiplayer inability we decided to create new server and client based on original game arts

You FOnline guys are using a brand-new engine which loads Fallout graphics and is distributed without them. It is a MMO-type engine.

I on the other hand also use a brand-new engine which loads Tactics graphics and will be eventually distributed without them. It's a single-player engine.

It's funny how Russian minds think alike.

I'll better wait for 2011 and Anderson's Fallout: Online.

You know it's better not to wait and not to have expectations nowadays, do you;) ?
Yeah... Agree with you *going to Age of Cohan site* :)
Actually, FOnline first town - chaos. Why I can't register English named character? Why I can't go to fullscreen? Where's tutorial?
I know, that's just fan project but... *going to Age of Cohan site*.

There is a really great potential here!
Would never have thought that something like that was possible.
But why are they people killing everybody?
They even killed Ma from the Den...

And Mr Fixit is here too!

Actually, the one thing that could make me interested in any kind of MMO is to resign from the 'same quest for everyone', 'almost like in single player but there are actually many players' schemes, and make something which feels like a real world filled with people...

But of course it's not realeted to FOnline, but in general, and of course I'll give the FOnline a try.

You can switch the language for english by FOConfig.exe. In the Game options you can choose key combination for Keyboard lunguage switch. Then, you enter the game, and you can switch the language by key combination you choosed in FOConfig.exe. As well you can register English named character. Now we have only tutorial in russian, but we'll translate it soon.

You guys know it's not that hard to make custom FO maps? Playing a MMO Fo2 would get old fast.

All the quests and everything which any NPC says in a game will be translated into English :D . So everyone who speaks English will be able to play FOnline without any problems  . But it will take us some time to translate it all. :) But I guess we will be ready to present an English version of FOnline when will start the full game, not the demo like we did. Which was half translated into English.
