Greetings from Deadwood, SD

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Has anyone ever spent time here in South Dakota? I feel a bit, depressed, its pretty... remote.

I'm amazed that I have a 3mbps connection though, I was thinking more like... dial up.

If anyone has been to South Dakota, whats there to do here when I'm not working?

Haha. Whatever there is to do in South Dakota, you're doing it. Unless you like slot machines, drinking and stupid touristy crap, there isn't much. Mount Rushmore but it might be closed this time of year.

In other words, enjoy the fresh air and all the time in the world to think. Besides, everyone from South Dakota are rabbit chokers.

EDIT: If it were summer still I'd recommend fishing/hiking and outdoorsy stuff but currently it's probably too cold for any of that..... try the South Dakota lotto?

Since I'm from Wisconsin I've been there a few times, passing through. The Badlands are cool, but there isn't much to do there, really, beyond looking. If you could go back to the late 19th century it would be better: whores, gambling, and gunfights.

If it were summer your options would be better. This time of year...I'd look in the local newspapers for a rodeo or a hockey game or some other kind of regional festivity. A saloon with live music? A museum?

What on earth are you doing in South Dakota, anyway?

I went to Rushmore this morning, that was a decent site. Then we decided to hop over to see Crazyhorse thinking it was much more completed than it currently is, so that was not eventful.

I'm here on a business trip and yes, its all ready snowing here. Been snowing off and on since I got here on Tuesday. One of my co-workers drove through here on his way home (Washington state) its the only place he got a ticket. he said he could not go fast enough to get out of South Dakota. haha

Interestingly, there does not appear to be any diversity to the local vegetation. No wonder why the American Indians that were forced here hated it so much. I've spotted grass, pine trees and some shriveled up leaf trees... Did I mention grass?

Geologically there is allot going on. I can't quite fathom the processes that shaped this land. As far as you can see its roughly a few inches of top-soil then rock.

Driving from Deadwood (the old gun-slinging town mentioned above) to Mt Rushmore I spotted quite a few odd rock formations and rock compositions. The rock is about the most colorful feature of the area. One mile you have red rock (assumingly rich in iron) and another mile you have black obsidian type rock. Apparently granite and marble are in high abundance here too (pink/purple color).

So, not much. I'm looking forward to getting back home now that I've seen what most likely is all there is to see out here. Thanks for the comments all.

the whole northern part of the US was created by glaciers and long-term water-flows.

Cim, they're only using private funds, they keep refusing government grants and such. Else it'd probably be done a long time ago, they want no government intervention what so ever. Kinda cool, won't be finished in our lifetime though, hah

Indeed it was but the geologic features seen here are unlike elsewhere in the North of the US. Why is the bedrock so close to the surface and seemingly everywhere you look? In Washington state you can dig holes as deep as your hearts content and not hit solid bed rock.

hoary me! I won third place in a slot machine tournament. Got 50 USD and didn't pay a dime to get in or run the machines. My trick was to treat the slot machine like a beautiful piano... The bitch still only gave me 3rd place *squints*

Didn't know that. Interesting, I guess it would be kind of hypocritical to take money from the Federales.

But still, with the lack of progreess it seems like one dude and a scrap of sand paper whittling away there.

This is kinda cliche, but the Native Americans are probably like the Fremen in the sense that they've been around so long and expect to be around forever so time is not something to scoff at.

Also I would love to see the Badlands of SD someday. Lucky you Maphusio.

hahah im not so certain I was lucky. On my way back to thee airport (where I currently await a 3:55pm flight to Denver (2pm now)) the rental car driver asked if we had visited the badlands. I had unfortunately not heard about them.

You should have mentioned those earlier! Although, I do have 2 hours to kill...

Well as long as you enjoyed your stay. There isn't much out here in the "rustic west" as most people from more populated states call it.

I was going to say if you found yourself in the Wyoming direction eat at the restaurant I work at but that's not likely. We do serve good food. It'd also be funny if I got a comment card signed Maphusio.

Oh forgot to mention, the thing is gigantic, dwarfs Rushmore, I forget the exact specs of it, but much larger.

Probably never finish. Have you seen the models of what Rushmore was to be before they started, was supposed to include most of their torsos too. Ran outta time, money and who knows what else, still quite the achievement though. It's great to dream big.

Hah thanks for the invite, I flew over Wyoming though, saw plenty o' farms. Ugh, that flight from Denver to Seatac was a bitch... I was so anxious to get home that it seemed like the flight I took from LAX to Sydney a few years back.

I wound up eating at a Restaurant in Rapid city (some sort of Americanized Italian/pizza/burger chain). Ugh the girl there was frackin' gorgeous! A 5' nothin blond, tiny body skin to die for... The hostess was probably too young but, pretty damn cute herself.

anyway im back all is workin.

Ahem. To quote myself from the third post in this thread...
The Badlands are cool...

My main impression of the Badlands was that it would be incredibly dangerous to get lost in them. They're a maze of gullies and ridges that all look the same and there's no water. You could stand on top of a ridge (a hard climb - steep and crumbly dirt) to get an idea where you should go to get out, but once back down in the next gully you'd be lost again. If it rained I'm sure they would instantly flood.

Yeah, that's pretty much what it is.

BTW, Devil's Tower in Wyoming is worth a look if you're ever in the area. It'll give you a new appreciation for Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

I don't know if I will ever be going back... It wasn't my scene. I'm used to the Pacific NW where there is a very diverse ecosystem. It seemed quite bland there.

Thanks though.
