Hello I have recently started my first ever play through of Fallout 1.

Feel free to give some advice but no spoilers please!

Okay just a day ago my friend kept begging to play this game called "Fallout" I've heard of the franchise but never got enough free time to play it but luckily my friend asked me to play this game when I was on vacation. So I bought it off steam, saw the intro, then I made my character.

I named him "Tom" because I watched alot of Tom & Jerry as a kid and Tom was always my favourite character.

Tom's stats where:

ST-6
PE-7
EN-5
CH-2
IN-7
AG-9
IK-4

Perks:
Bloody Mess.

Tagged Skills:
Small guns.
Energy Weapons.
Speech.

I chose these stats because I've always wanted to be a lone gunslinging cowboy ever since I was a kid.

I also downloaded the official guidebook pdf online.

I looted the skeleton of a vault 13 resident and engaged in combat for the first time. Okay when I first started to kill rats I laughed for a bit because my character was named after Tom the cat. After I left the cave I headed to vault 15 and in the way found Shady Sands. I met all the villagers and I accepted the quest to kill the radscorpions and got absolutely bodied but at least I managed to kill 1 radscorpion. So I loaded up a save and found and recruited Ian my first companion and he I went back to the caves and died but we managed to kill more than 1 radscorpion. Loaded a save again and recruited Ian but this time we went to vault 15 and found out we needed a rope so we headed back to shady sands and bartered with Seth a machete for a rope. We headed back to Vault 15 and we found a smg and a leather jacket and another rope so we descended deeper and while in combat Ian accidentally shot me so I moved out of his sightline and just shot from a distance. After almost a hour of trying to find a water chip I realised the there is no water chip here so we went to shady sands and projected all my anger at the radscorpions and finally cleared the nest and it felt amazing. After that I completed the quest and went to the bandits and died. So this time Me and Ian went to junktown where I met Killian and found dogmeat. Killian asked me to plant a bug on Gizmo and I accepted the quest. After many tries I founded out I needed to use the steal skill to put the bug on Gizmo. And then after Gizmo confessed I went back to Killian and killed Gizmo and while fighting the funniest thing just happened, While me, Ian and Killian's gaurds were fighting Gizmo's gaurds Dog Meat just walked up to Gizmo and killed him. I laughed for a while and I completed the quest and went to the Hub and saved then quit and I went to sleep.

So was I doing well or was I missing something super important let me know!

Update: I have killed the deathclaw and completed the Far Go Traders quest and I am now heading to the boneyard.

There are multiple ways to deal with the bandit situation in Shady Sands that doesn't involve killing all of them.
But you should probably be able to kill them all by now if you try.

Completely Vanilla

Aim for the eyes.

Always have stimpacks equipped so you don't have to open your inventory to use them.

Use drugs such as psycho (for damage resistance) and jet (more AP) to enhance your combat skills, but try not to get addicted.

Try to use your environment to your advantage. For example, hide behind walls and wait for enemies to come to you.

If you recruit Ian, whatever you do, don't give him an smg.

Lastly, try not to get shot.

Thanks! Im now currently helping the Far Go traders find their missing caravans.

Opening inventory allow you to use as many as you want instead of one at a time though
So what option do you think is better?

I think that's great for a first run!

If you intend a second playthrough to really familiarise yourself with Fallout then there are some great mods that comes with bug fixing and other conveniences. Check out either Fallout Fixt or Fallout et tu.

Here are some tips on how to create a good character that you might find interesting.

Depends.
Waiting until you're lower to use more at once is maybe the higher risk higher reward strategy (the reward being fewer spent AP).
In the beginning when you have low HP, the risk is higher and rewards are rarer, since you'd often only use one or two stims to get to full.
Once you have enough HP, one stimpak is a drop in a bucket, so you'd almost always open inventory.

Drug dealer in Hub Old Town can be killed without Karma or Reputation loss, doesn't turn the town hostile. Dozen Psychos, Buffouts, Radaways, over 20 RadX plus some weapons from him and his bodyguards.

They only have one Desert Eagle and sledgehammers for protection.

The best advice for Fallout 1 that I have, is to be aware of your character's immediate surroundings. The game developers implemented party NPC AIs (like Ian) as an afterthought, and through scripting only. Hence Party members cannot actually check to see if the PC is in their line of fire; so you can get your PC sprayed with bullets if they are standing between a party NPC and their target.

Also [related] the NPCs can at times occupy the only hex in a room that would allow the PC to enter or exit—be it a doorway, or even a tight corner in the room. Do not allow them to block you in, because there is no means of getting them to move, without violence, or the random fluke that they decide to move on their own. Save your game when exploring rooms with tight spaces if you have party NPCs.

This last bit was fixed in Fallout 2, but in Fallout 1 it is very easy to get stuck behind your party members.

Yeah Ian was really a pain in the ass when exploring buildings.

My best advice would be a bit of a spoiler and I am sorry but I dont know how to use a tab to hide spoiler. I take a certain perk as early as possible. This perk reduces AP cost for opening inventory. I won't say anymore only a quick runthrough then a restart was my way of learning. Most people use a (build) as stock characters are not great !
