Help me run New Vegas on my PC!

Hey there... so I've been playing NV on my Xbox and enjoying it a lot, but I wanted to give the PC version a try on my laptop for when My room mates want to play something else on the box. I installed it and set it to lowest settings, and it seemed to be running pretty well inside the Doc's house. Then, however, I stepped outside, and while the environment around me continued to move at an acceptable pace I lost all responsivness in my controls and couldn't manage even to walk out past the fence.

Here's my equipment:

Acer Extensa 4420
ATI Radeon 1250
AMD Athlon 64x2
2 gb RAM

Is there any kind of workaround I can use to get the game to a playable state? Or should I just give up and stick to the Xbox? Thanks in advance.
 
With as many great posts as you've been making (with emphasis on your Fallout 3 reflections), it's a crime this hasn't received an answer..

Wish I could help but know you've made the last hour of my reading through this forum far more enjoyable.
 
I think the main problem with your configuration is the video card (as I play NW on a Dell D630 with 2 gb ram and a dedicated NVS 135M video card). Did you lower everything in the game launcher? I think mainly detailed textures and big LOD (and generally memory-extensive features) strain these weak video cards.
 
Your graphics card is probably the bottle neck there... have you updated the drivers recently? What version of Windows are you running?

You might be able to optimize/tweak some things if you want to run Tune-up utilities:

Make sure you're free of any spyware/adware that might be running. You probably aren't going to get more than a low/medium config though. I'm running a similar system.
 
I'll post some overall tips to improve game's performance but I am not promising anything.

1. Make sure that no memory-hog processes/services are running in the backroung while playing the game. You could also try to disable anti-virus software if any.

2.Run TuneUp Utilities and turn on turbo mode. It seems to be helping me in the recent video games endeavors.

3.Don't just set your settings to low. Make sure that every slider in the launcher is set as low as possible.

4.Try out a handful of performance improving mods over and newvegasnexus, such as this one:

5. Go back to DirectX 9 (if possible)

6. If you did, do not launch the game through Steam!

7. Download the latest ATi drivers.
 
Sadly, laptops are not worth buying if considered as gaming machines, especially when it comes to more requiring titles (F:NV, Crysis, etc). Even if you had better GPU, the game wouldn't run properly on a laptop. My lenovo g560 (i5 ; gf 310 ; 4 GB ram) can't just handle the game as normally as my desktop does (C2D ; HD4850 ; 2GB ram). The game must run fluently, that's why I have my desktop PC :)

The rule seems to be quite simple: Take a really good laptop and divide its benchamark results by 3 and you'll get the actual performance of it :).
