Im trying to manually install my fallout trilogy disc I bought off of amazon. Keep in mind I know nothing about manual installation (most of the pc games I have are made after 2008 so the install or patches are pretty automatic) but I've been searching the disc in my DVD drive for the falloutw.___ that needs to be renamed falloutw.exe and I'm not seeing it at all. Am i blind or is it under something else? I'm sorry if its a dumb question I just would like to play this before i go to sleep.

Just out of curiosity, what exactly are you trying to accomplish by renaming files on the disc? Is the game already installed?

On my Fallout Collection CD, the only files I have are an autorun script, 5 compressed game data files, the Fallout icon, and the setup executable. Setup is obviously used to install the game.

On my computer, the installed falloutw executable is found in "C:/Program Files (x86)/Interplay/Fallout". Hope this helps.

I was just following the manual install that I found on this site. I've been trying to reformat the resolution so that the top and bottom of my screen in game aren't cut off. I thought I could use the high res patch to fix this but if I install the game as intended, all the files remain on the disc and I can't use the patch. That's why I was trying to manually install it so I could use the patch and any mods to fix glitches. The Setup won't allow me to to alter resolution and running Compatibility doesn't do anything.

Have you messed with ddraw at all? That's how I always got the older games to run on modern machines.

In the game's folder (the one with the actual executable program), there should be a file called "ddraw.ini". If you open that in a text editor like Notepad, it will let you make changes similar to a Word document. If you scroll down, the third section of the document is titled "[Graphics]". There should be a small block of text explaining the different graphics modes under that title, followed by a line that says "Mode=" and a number which is likely 0. Change that number to 4 or 5. Mode 4 runs the game in fullscreen, while 5 runs it in a window.

See if that does anything.

Okay I found the ddraw files but there's no .ini there's .dll .inf and .vxd

Tried both and nithern would open. It says:

Error extracting the selected object. If the archive is password protected please provide it.

It's in a .cab folder

Hmm. Sounds like you might have to unpack that file. A cab is basically like a zip or a rar if you are familiar with either of those formats. Essentially compresses data into a smaller size, but doesn't let you use the file in that state. A program like 7-Zip might be able to deal with that cab file for you and allow access to the ddraw configuration. I'm not 100% sure what that error is about, though.

Truthfully, ddraw might not even be your problem to begin with, that was just my best guess. I don't think we have the same release of the game, and I use Windows 7.

I use peazip which is the same thing and the darn thing wouldn't open. Lol but thanks anyway for telling me where to find the file. I was looking in the wrong place for it. I was able to do the manual install and now I just have to get fixt to work and it should be smooth sailing lol. I appreciate the help.
