I have zero respect for Bethesda now

Yes this is a little late. But I didn't expect Bethesda to screw up this hard on Fallout 76. Luckily I didn't fall for the fanboy hype. I don't plan on ever buying it either. Lmao at the repair kit fiasco. I have no expectations for the next Fallout, I'll just wait and see what they make. E3 will likely be shit.

JFL if Bethesda can't make Starfield a decent RPG in a few years. Imagine that, Todd's pet project being a mediocre RPG with crap lore. Especially since he called it "The biggest most epic science fiction thing you could possibly imagine."

On a side note I played Fallout 1 for the first time, I spent a little more than 1.5 hours. Not really a fan, but only because it's not an FPS game. Say what you will, but I prefer first-person RPGs like Deus Ex.

I know I'll get lynch mobbed, but Fo76 isn't that bad. It's not great, but it can be fun running around with a friend discovering places and killing other players. I know I'll probably get banned for saying all of this, but I think that there was a massive overreaction to the game.

I agree that there was a major overreaction, but only because people here at NMA have seen the writing on the wall since 2008. Issues present in both of Bethesda's other titles were never resolved and only compacted, and 76 basically had enough issues that affected the mainstream audiences to put the Internet hate machine in overdrive and lead people to nitpick the game down to its core, regardless if they loved some of 76's features in other Bethesda games.

Arpgs are fine and all (hell I've even loosened my stance on jrpgs) but by far the most rpg RPGs have been Crpgs.

Fun with a friend is no kind of compliment at all. If two people are good enough friends they can have fun rolling around a dog turd.

LOL. I should have clarified that I DO like the game, just hate the isometric style. I just prefer the first-person aspect because it can give a nice view/perspective, e.g. The view of New York from Liberty Island in Deus Ex. Also having real time combat with (mostly) direct control over my aim is far better than RNG, in my opinion.

That RNG is what makes it a RPG, because that's how the game conveys to the player how the character is doing what he/she is doing. FPS means you, the player, is the one controlling everything, meaning it's not the character themselves aiming and doing everything on their own, but you instead.

FPS is objectively a much worse system to convey RPG elements. Like the RNG or not, that's how it is.

What exactly does that mean? I never really understood the definition of an RPG exactly. I always assumed RPG was "You pretend you are xyz person, and you make decisions that change the outcome." But I truly don't understand what you mean by RNG makes an RPG.

RPGs above all else make an effort to have a characters abilities, talents, skills, and actions abstracted through stats and equations. For example in fallout 1 a character with 1 perception basically can't fucking see and so they aims like dogshit. But in fallout 3 a character can have 1 perception and still be a crack shot in a dimly lit metro because the player is aiming. The act of aiming is not abstracted and is instead a literal translation of a player input. Part of the role that character plays is "blind/near sighted" but the game has no choice but to straight up ignore that due to being first person.

I see now, thanks for enlightening me.

Anyways to finalize/clarify my original point about aiming, I do like having weapon sway, making it more difficult to aim if you don't have the right skills. I never meant to say "RNG bad." But I don't think either of you misunderstood.:ok:

Cant tell if sarcasm or naw

Scrub, go play a REAL rpg, then get back to me," then I would have been sarcastic.
But you already did that and didn't like it :smug:

Yeah games can do stuff like that. Other things new Vegas does is have enemies load in farther away with higher perception and i think small guns damage might be higher... For some reason.... but all this is really just compromise tbh. Because a player may be able to compensate for weapon sway. Plus I think weapon sway is tied to strength.

You play the role of a character, but that character is his/her own character. The only thing you, as the player, can do is tell that character what to do. But how the character performs is up to the character themselves. This is what turn based does, it's a visual representation of this. This is what the stats are meant to symbolize.

FPS on the other hand doesn't allow this, because you, the player, are the one aiming and moving. You are not telling what the character should be doing, you are the character. At this point you are larping basically, and not actually playing the role of a character.

Then there's the issue of half of the game being player skill based and the other half character skill based. You have speech checks, which the character themselves are obviously meant to pass or fail themselves (the player has no way to manipulate these themselves manually like in FPS combat), but in actual combat is you dictate everything he/she does. There's a clear disconnect here.

The only thing you, as the player, can do is tell that character what to do.

Ok, so from what you and Graves both said, an RPG in simplest terms is basically when you command a character and the successes and failures of said commands are tied to numbers, no?

Basically yeah, in the broadest possible sense. But there are tons of different types of RPGs.

Jrpgs have heavy focus on character and story.
Arpgs have more of a focus on action.
Western RPGs like being big and open and rilled with content
And Crpgs like being real RPGs ha got eem

But you already did that and didn't like it :smug:

I know you're just messing, but Deus Ex is a real RPG. It's just not the same kind or of the same standard. If there was a first person remake of a classic Fallout you can bet I'd be the first to play it.
