The IGN LiveWire demo presentation of Fallout 3 - which isn't bad at all - is now available for easy viewing, in case you missed it earlier. It's also available for download, including in HD (is 640x480 HD?).
Though he didn't reveal any of the details of the story, Todd Howard talked about the overall perspective of the game, how some of the factions fit into the world, and how to make use of the game's Pip Boy.

More than anything else, the demo allows you to get a really great look at the game's VATS and real-time combat systems, from incinerating raider gangs with laser rifles to blasting mobile sentry bots with a rocket launcher. Best of all, Todd really lets loose in a parking lot fight with the Enclave by making gratuitous use of his personal nuclear bomb launcher. That's definitely something you don't want to miss.
Thanks Ausir.

Anyone willing to try and extract a few screenshots from the "HD" version? 640 is quite decent for screenshots.

pwn. Fair enough, 1280x720 is pretty HD-ish.

Any IGN insiders around? Some screencaps of that would be sweeeeet.

Of course. There's only one gameplay demo area.

Game was first unveiled a year ago, since then they've had 2 linear demos to show to the press, 1 linear demo to show to the public and 1 hands-on press package - most press people limited to half an hour.

You'd almost think they're paranoid about information :P

They sure do love to reuse the same material for hype purposes. The second demo managed a round of previews that told us very little we didn't already know, and the E3 round is much the same.

Yes, but none of the other demos was available as a good quality download.

Nor is this one. Again, unless some IGN Insider will provide us some neat screencaps of - say - the Eye-Bot, the PipBoy interface, the hacking interface, V.A.T.S. aiming at those weirdly crouched ranger, the turret shooting, V.A.T.S. on the securitybots, securitybot in pulse grenade, the Enclave vertibird landing, the Enclave shooting, Enclave in V.A.T.S. and the cinematics of the Fatman getting shot + nuke explosions.

Someone make it so!

Don't have Insider but I did pull a slightly clearer pic of the Advanced Power Armor out of the better quality streaming video.

Todd Howard identified it as the power armor from FO2 so I think this is just their version of it. Aside from the tubes being changed to little aerial looking things, I think it looks closer to the FO2 APA than the FOT armor.

They look like they match those statues they just built.... only with horns. What the hell is with the horns?

I don't see how it's closer to APA than to FOT PA.
Well this is hampered by the lack of any large full body art assets for the APA but I'll try to show you what I mean.
fo3vsfotnv9.jpg

The first thing is the eyes. The FOT eyes are very narrow and angry looking. The FO3 eyes are more bulbous and insect like the F2 APA.

Next the armor over the mouth on the FOT PA is very rounded and gasmask like while the FO3 one (though obscured by the hand) seems to be flat metal like the FO2 one

The Shoulders are definitely toned down from the torso sized beasts of FO2 but I think the shape, attachment point and height (note the FOT pads are level with the eyes while the FO3 ones are close to the top of the head) are closer to FO2 than tactics. Also no chain and cloak.

The chest and body are on the FOT armor emulate muscles with an upward curving chestplate with pecs and six pack abs. The FO3 chest looks more like a cowcatcher with the prominent protruding central ridge and downward angle. The stomach is segmented like an insect rather than human like.

You can't really see it in this pic but the knees have the extruded rings on them that were a feature of the older PA but aren't on the FOT one.

And finally the FO3 armor seems to be signifigantly darker than the FOT armor.

I think they just redesigned some elements of the FO2 PA to work around a universal skeletal animation. I'm guessing the tubes which used to hook into the back armor behind the head got turned into robot aerials when the back armor got toned down. This is just my opinion of course.

Ok just saw the video again, so besides the first person view distance, the environment seems pretty rich in detail and depth as well, especially the sky when he pointed the gun up in the air. I can tell you that I will not be missing the isometric view from previous games. The enemy designs are fine to me, but if you are anal about it I guess it really does matter. The stats interface on the pipboy has all the depth, but is much more organized and intuitive, without cutting out the depth of the rpg elements.

Looking pretty solid!

Does Pete Hines know you're auditioning for his job?

I'm not saying RPGs shouldn't be pretty, but it's not a prerequisite for good role-playing, is it?

It really looks like a texture pack for Oblivion, which would've sufficed four years ago. Couple that with the awkward animations and "improved" AI. It's not even enough to staisify undiscerning graphics whores.

I really don't know why you are saying the textures are copy and pasted, as the two settings are completely different. I looked at some Oblivion footage, and I really don't see any environmental similarities at all. The Ai is ok by what I have seen, but I'll try the game out first before any scrutinizing. I played some mud games so yeah its not a prerequisite, but thats how the perspective in this game would have to meet. Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 had basically the exact same graphics, but no one complained about that?

Man, Bethesda simply can't GET Fallout art style. Their Power Armor is not good. Mutants are not good. Only that Ghoul Barman looked ok to me. And don't forget wooden animation
