An interview with J. E. Sawyer, the lead designer of Fallout: New Vegas, has been made available on Xbox Live. However, us untermenschen without a subscription have to settle for an overview:
1. New areas will open up for the player depending on your reputation
2. Not all weapons have mods
3. "You only buy mods from stores" - once bought you highlight the weapon you want to add it to in your inventory and apply it
4. They will cost you a lot of money
5. Hardcore is seperate to difficulty
6. Hardcore is more of a mechanical shift as opposed to just bumping up hp - he compares it to Ninja Gaiden
7. There is a dehydration meter
8. Dehydration meter will have impact o the player (most likely drop in stats)
9. Being out in the desert in the day, as opposed to night, will have a greater effect on your need for food and water
Link: Interview with JES, rundown

Thanks, CoolManDan, you're cool.

Fallout: New Vegas really does sound good.
Though i find it bit depressing that they had to make a separate mode called Hardcore, for what should be normal mode.
Oh well.

I agree. But that's what saving and reloading is all about. And I know we all have done that before.

dude. seriously? it's the state of the fucking world right now. spend 5 minutes reading at Bethesda's forums and you'll feel like a few years of education have been ripped right off your memory. it's mind-numbing how dumb kids are. i work with a fucking 20 year old who didn't know how to address a fucking envelope, man! the internet is dulling the minds of our youth, make no mistake.

pretty soon the world will be a yipping, farting, belching mess of shit-stains on the highway.

take the few pieces of "good" you see and be thankful we still have "good" in our lifetime because if there is to be another renaissance it ain't happening in my lifetime or yours, suckah.

I'm not sure about that. Some people want a more casual experience, enjoying the story and combat without having to bother themselves looking for water and shit. Not all people have a lot of free time to spend on saving&reload or simply are not into games that much to try so hard. It's not all about intelligence\skill\what the fuck ever, games are simple entertainment for many people and it's OK.

Besides, if they screw up the balance for the dehydration system, you can always play the game without it, on normal.

PS BTW I *am* going to play hardcore on my first playthrough, I just figured I'd say something in the matter.

Yeah - well i wonder if hardcore will be hardcore enough.
Thou its better to have this hardcore mode then some casual retarded mode only.

Sounds good, except for the dehydration meter, which sounds terrible. Mask of the Betrayer, anyone? Ugh.
I think the spirit meter actually worked pretty well, because it was integrated into the interactive narrative. There was some tedious management involved, but there was more to it than just remembering to suppress every day, and it made some sense that being "good" should be hard.

My guess is that dehydration in hardcore mode will only necessitate menial resource management, because water will probably be readily available (for sale, in toilets, etc...). They could conceivably do something with it if they strictly limit how much water you can carry at once, and then use that as a limit on exploration which could be expanded by acquiring items or water access through quests. But that's not going to happen in an optional mode in a free-roaming game. It will probably be lame, like managing food in the old Ultima games.

Come on... Get Critical!

They called it "Hardcore" mode because "Realism" mode is for pussies. Even the gods know that Fallout: New Vegas will be only for the manliest Chuck Norris look-a-like professionals.

As if drinking out of toilets by accident wasn't bad enough.
If done well itcould be a good thing finally water will have a REAL purpose. Not just beeing your karma-increase feature (I hope they removed THAT part completely, you should not get a better reputation cause you give water as gift simply kills the reason of karma or anything like that).

I definitely agree with Ravager69 on the hardcore mode being just that, a mode. Really depends on the game, but sometimes I just want to enjoy a casual time without being frustrated by overly difficult combat, little ammo, etc. I imagine dehydration will be similar to Stalker Call of Pripyat's hunger - meaning it'll be pretty forgiving and you'll be able to find ways to hydrate without much problem.

I play Mass Effect 2 on Casual because I want to focus on the story, the combat is almost like a pain in the ass mini-game to me. I'd rather skip it.

I played Dragon Age on easy for the same reason... it just took too much time going into strategic positioning of teammates and such. And I felt the system was flawed.

That's one of the reasons I love the original Fallout's so much. You can play through much of the games without having to deal with combat. Diplomacy in RPGs seems a lost art. But then when you actually got down to fighting, it was rewarding, interesting, and FUN.

Umm ronin84 did we play the same game, since Fallout was anything, but light on combat. Hell most of time you had few minute breaks before new one started. Planscape on the other would have been better example. If you mean the way you could Handel some of the quests without turning violent I agree.

Back to topic, any idea if finally heavy weapons will have STR requirements. Seemed kind of silly that every Jack & Jill coud be running around with minigun/famer.

Because combat is the only type of gameplay in existence.
