While we're all waiting on news on Fallout, any kind of news really, inXile keeps on chugging. The latest news: they're going to make a real Bard's Tale sequel. Not the comedy version inXile released over a decade ago, but a proper Bard's Tale 4. That's what Brian Fargo told IGN. The Bard's Tale franchise was one of early Interplay's biggest successes, and one of the precursors of many later fantasy RPGs, just as the original Wasteland was the precursor of Fallout and other post-apocalyptic RPGs.

Fargo noted that he'll be turning to crowdfunding to help fund this game, as he did with Torment: Tides of Numenera and Wasteland 2. This sequel won't be the same as the last game, which is now over 20 yeras old, and the most notable change will be a move toward what the hardcore RPG community used to call phase-based combat.

"Traditional turn-based combat," as Fargo calls it, bases turns on varying factors, creating battles in which different characters attacked at different times, often alternating between opposing sides. But in The Bard's Tale IV, teams attack all at once. This increases the pace of the combat, and allows for a different set of tactics than the traditional system might allow.

Wasteland 2 was a solid outing, and Torment: Tides of Numenera looks pretty exciting to me, though neither is exactly Fallout-y. Still, they keep making things that are vaguely related to Fallout, and now the front page looks slightly less depressing.

Is this the start of a decline of NMA :look:

May Interplay have mercy with our souls.

Seriously though. Those are some nice news.

Disappointed. Don't care much for Bard's Tale, although maybe my opinion will change by the time this comes out, which will be a while.

On a Fallout news related note: at the beginning of January, Jason Scheier from Kotaku said that Fallout 4 will soon be announced. The same guy who posted those horrible "leaked" scripts, so take it with a grain of salt.

Bard's Tale 4? Really? Not my cup of tea. At all.

I wonder when he'll start using the profits from earlier crowdfunded games to fund a new game, instead of begging for money ad nauseam. It's not exactly the kind of business model that I expected. And it's not going to last indefinitely either. One bad game and people will move onto greener pastures. It all seems very amateurish and cheap to me.

It's only logical that he milk Kickstarter to the last drop. Imagine yourself in Fargo's position - the hype of his games is already at its death throes. Except for the old school RPG crowd, people have already mostly lost interest in whatever inXile wants to make next. He needs to be economical.

However, with that said, it's also true that the old school RPG crowd will most likely support inXile beyond the point of reason. Wasteland 2 was already something that didn't even come close to living up to the hype, but, judging by RPG Codex, people are still jerking off to Torment: Tides of Numenera. So he does have a loyal customer base he can count on to buy his games.

If Numenera is half is good as Planescape it will be well worth me backing it.
