Is .38 Special autoloding-possible ammunition in real life?

I've did made some progress playing Fallout 4 (GOTY Edition). and notices that so many humans (raiders and settlers alike) use pipeguns of various kind, mostly uses .38 special. (Bolt action rifle variants uses .308 Winchester instead)

This ammunition was originally designed for Smith and Wession M10 Military and Police double action revolvers.

too bad the revolver (and the cartridges) itself lost 'Military' value as standard sidearms after its lousy performances with US Marines during The Moro Phillipines Insurrection (1988-1902). failed to stop Moro berserkers high on chems (not mentioning that these Moro warriors wore steel armor, something not what US Military at that time does (There never was Cuirassiers in American history except mabye the earliest 'Minutemen Cavalry', and definitely not within 18th-19th Centuries.) this debriefings led to the development of more powerful sidearms -- one that's self loading, one that uses much stronger rounds-- the .45 ACP

Much to my disbelieve. in this game even automatic weapons use .38 special. particularly pipe (self loading) guns (and I even got a hand on this 'Assault Rifle' / Submachinegun variants (which quite a shadow to David Williams 'Carbines' (M1 - M3 Carbines, one that he designed when he as incarcerated during Roaring Twenties, and this design even earn him absolutions). did .38 Special giving out strong kick enough to push breech slider back far enough to complete autoloading action cycle?
is there any real life tests of any SMGs or autoloading carbines chambering .38 Special?

^ This gun. I'm so lucky enough to get Autorifle variants from a fated raider somewhere in Corvega Plant near Lexington.
