I am actually surprised to see games from the eighties/early nineties on the list.

Me too. He actually has some pretty good games on that list.

Reading that he wants to take the iPhone version of Civilization with him to a desert island, makes me wish he'd go ahead and do just that, though.

Well to be fair he does say that Ultima 4, 6, and 7 alternate from year to year in holding that position in his Top 10 list. But, yeah kind of sad that the designer of one of the top selling RPGs in recent years doesn't have more RPGs in his Top 10.

Many people get inspired by something but don't have abilities to do something as good or better as it.

Oddly enough, many design decisions in this game influenced Oblivion, which I was working on at the time, to the point of me referring to Oblivion as “The Gran Turismo of RPGs” around the office.
