Poll finds more Americans believe in devil than Darwin

More Americans believe in a literal hell and the devil than Darwin's theory of evolution, according to a new Harris poll released on Thursday.

It is the latest survey to highlight America's deep level of religiosity, a cultural trait that sets it apart from much of the developed world.

It also helps explain many of its political battles which Europeans find bewildering, such as efforts to have "Intelligent Design" theory -- which holds life is too complex to have evolved by chance -- taught in schools alongside evolution.

Now, I suppose no one is entirely shocked by this, but the percentages listed in the article are absolutely mindboggling!
Check it out!

Not that mindboggling, the majority thinks hell exists and take stuff like miracles seriously, a minority believes in Darwin. If you take the entire US of A, is that really so surprising?

On the other hand, in Europe, Darwin's theories aren't really questioned enough on an individual basis. I mean, it's odd to "believe" in a theory that's really only provable on the micro level, and has several gaping holes as well.

Then again, the Christians that say athiests should question their beliefs would be insulted if you ask them to question their beliefs.

Whatever. As long as they're happy.

The majority religion in America is the Evangelists, the christian literal new-age born-again baptists, and they are more than 30% of our population.
Thats why all of our presidents are christian.
those are who elected bush. they are the scum that propels us at wars.
they litter themselves in large numbers through the sparsely populated midwest and central country, the coasts are far more liberal and diversified.

My father is one.
He told me yesterday that the constitution wasnt meant to be taken literally, even thoughh he vowed to uphold it when he joined the military.
I wanted to punch him in the jaw and call him traitorous scum.

*plays DVDA's "America, Fuck yeah!"

I am not in the least surprised by any of this. What I AM surprised from is how come the USA seems to be one of the most religious places in the world? It's almost like a bad joke..

We got all kinds over here. You have the right to believe as you wish, no matter how stupid that wish may be.

I wonder what the statistics are in the European Union, especially given immigration trends as of late. Particularly if Turkey is allowed to join the EU. You might be catching up to us.

Are we seriously letting reality devolve on a poll? 2500 people over the course of 6 days ain't exactly rocket science, colloquially speaking. Those numbers don't tell much of a story on their own-- for all we know, the entire sample group was drawn from the citizens of a single county, down in the dark heart of the Bible Belt.

Call it denial, call it misplaced faith in my countrymen, but I just can't accept these figures.

Been to the midwest lately?

well, you cant let yourself be guided by 'official' numbers on this matter for most EU countries.

for instance, everyone that was baptised by their parents is considered Catholic... which obviously isn't so in reality. so you're better off looking at other numbers.

from wiki about belgian/flemish religion:
"A 2006 inquiry in Flanders, considered to be more a more religious region than Wallonia, showed that 55% considered themselves religious, and that 36% believed that God created the world."
and
"According to the 2001 Survey and Study of Religion, about 47% of the population identify themselves as belonging to the Catholic Church, while Islam is the second-largest religion at 4%"

yes and no.

believe in what you wish, but don't limit my own personal rights or endanger my wellbeing by practising your beliefs.

as all polls it should be taken with a grain of salt, but when i read about how atheists are treated in the USA, i have no doubt that there is a serious base to what this particular poll tells us.

That's why I made this thread:

In my opinion, Spiritism is a great philosophy because it fills the holes in Darwinism nicely by introducing a somewhat scientific vision of metaphysics, bringing the idea of evolution of the species not only as organisms (that evolve in adaptability/survivability/etc), but also as individual conscient beings - that evolve in moral and intelligence by subsequent reincarnations - and as components of societies - that evolve as well, both scientifically and moraly, as the souls come back more intelligent and moraly evolved .

And also explains the Bible in a far more rational way than religions - miracles, for example, are not understood as supernatural events, but as the effect of some still unknow law of nature, sometimes set in motion by som still unknow agent.

Things like these are all scaring me. Religions are getting stronger everywhere, people are denying the facts of science. We're really going backwards. What's more, I don't think it's even sincere belief.

We were having some problems with raining and water levels in the storage deposits lately. The Presidency of Religion Issues (even a worse thing that we have one) commissioned a bunch of Imams to pray in public for rain. It didn't rain, but somebody found out that it was done on a particular date when the chances of rain was maximum.

The politic group which governs Turkey today, in their website, used to have a section about their "grape miracle", where they claim they they've found a farmer who was growing grapes with one that has the symbol of that political group on it. They publicized it like it was a message from god, right before the elections. People believed it!

So funny how things work in my country. Completely different race, abnormally stupid, cunning and ignorant at the same time. Hard to believe people here are humans.

And even cops don't treat you like they should, if you are a homosexual, are not Turkish, or believe in something else than Islam.

I lived in KS for a while. Trust me, it's not so hard to believe. I get at least 1 couple a month to my door converting. (It's usually a male and a female team, so a couple. ) Jehova's witness seems to be quite common. It's not as bad for me though because I lived so far back in the complex, because the people in the front get more than I do.

The problem is that most of these towns are backwards in the sense of none - development. A lot of places stay the same over years and years, and there aren't a lot of population make up changes. The old rich and the old boys hold on to the power and the money, and you are usually not accepted unless you follow their ways.

Alican - I spent a decent chunk of time in Ankara, and took a trip once to Cappadocia. I thought your people were quite charming and the country was beautiful. When I was there, religion wasn't nearly as much of an issue as nationalism. Bad idea to say anything negative about Turkey in front of a cop.

Starseeker - I married a Jehovah's Witness and broke her out of the cult. For the most part, they aren't very good with the math. Special heaven is reserved for a select number of people, and considering the numbers of JWs world wide, that quota is probably filled. The rest settle for the second tier. Another fun fact - they have predicted the end of the world at least three times, yet they still show up knocking on my door.

I stand by what I said earlier. You are free to believe in anything you want. I am free to close the door on you.

I'm gonna stop you right there.
For something to be scientific, it involves a very specific form of scientific process to evaluate the hypothesis. Since this is metaphysical, it inherently can not stand up to scientific rigor, and is thusly not scientific in any way.
It is philosophical though, but then again, so is every other religion and science.
:)

Did you miss the word 'somewhat' right before scientific? If you read something about it before judging, you'll understand what I meant.

But before you say that I'm pointing you should read as a mean of convincing you to read, I'll try to explain:

Spiritists often try to submit most of the ideas in the philosophy to scientific study just like you described ("For something to be scientific, it involves a very specific form of scientific process to evaluate the hypothesis").

1. If the result proofs that the theory is crap, they throw it through the window;

2. If there's no conclusion after the research is done (mostly due to science not having means to neither prove nor deny), they either: A) leave it on the freezer if it's not very logical in the standards of today's societies, or B) keep it as a nice theory, worth their time and study if it's acceptable to our rational thinking. Just like Darwins' evolution of species.

3. If the result proofs that the theory is right... well, it's scientifically proven and there's no denial for facts, right?

Again, I'll tell you. Everybody can discuss a theory they just found and think is nice - that's what I'm doing; trying to share that with the intelligent people in NMA is not the same as preaching God's Armageddon in your door every fucking week - that's what I'm not doing and won't do.

Sorry if there's any Jehova's witness there, nothing personal

Something is either scientific or it is not, there is no "somewhat".

This is not scientific, there is no possible way to prove the hypothesis, the metaphysical, by DEFINITION, is not scientifically provable.
If something can be scientifically proven, then it is not metaphysical.
Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that investigates principles of reality transcending those of any particular science
