Man robs bank to get medical care in jail

Some people who need medical care but can't afford it go to the emergency room. Others just hope they'll get better. James Richard Verone robbed a bank.

Earlier this month, Verone (pictured), a 59-year-old convenience store clerk, walked into a Gaston, N.C., bank and handed the cashier a note demanding $1 and medical attention. Then he waited calmly for police to show up.

He's now in jail and has an appointment with a doctor this week.

Yep, the US's healthcare system works perfectly...

That statement is almost as stupid as the tard who robbed the bank. All he had to do was go to the hospital and he would have received care.

Hospitals can't turn away patients who cannot pay.

The teller was so frightened that she had to be taken to the hospital to be checked out.

Funniest and most noteworthy part of the story to be honest. What a loonie that teller must be.

They actually called the cops on him? If I was that teller I would have just handed him a $1 out of my wallet. :?

then why do so many americans I know actually say that health care is always an issue in the US ?

I am really curious. Because I have no clue.

It's not really as big a deal as people make it out to be, for instance it's true that hospitals can't turn you away when you need emergency care even if you can't pay.

Edit: From what I've heard from my Canadian relatives, we have it a lot better when it comes to medical care than they do up there. Make of that what you will.

This kind of thing is more common than you'd think. From where I'm from it's very common for a rotten-toothed meth addict to commit massive felonies just to get dental care. The shitty thing about this guy's situation though, the prison medical system is so backed up and his sentence most likely so light that he will be paroled before he gets the surgery he wants.

Hospitals can't turn you away for care, but have fun being harassed every day of your life for the next millennium to pay the insane bills they shove for even some of the most simple things.

Why? I have no problem to admit that there are things I have no knowledge about. Hence why I asked. Because it seems that you know everything  (dont take that to serious alright)

Medical care here is indeed free. If you head over to the hospital with a stomach ache they won't think twice about giving you a cat scan or any other test that probably costs a ton. What sucks for us is that our medical care seems like it's about 20 years behind (where I live anyway) and wait times for treatment can be pretty ridiculous.

A friend of mine went to the hospital with appendicitis (her appendix ruptured) and she was sent home until the next morning because they didn't have the doctor they needed to perform some necessary test. The actual appendix wasn't removed until a full 24-hours later.

Note: Her appendix had 'ruptured' not 'burst' but was still pretty serious.

If you head to the after-hours clinic in my city on any given day of the week it's a 3 hour wait. The waiting list to get a family doctor here is also well over a year.

Don't get me wrong though, free medical care is great. It means you don't have to worry about getting checked out, getting treatment, etc. It's always covered.

Actually this isn't really uncommon. Homeless people do shit like this in the winter all the time, since jail cells tend to be heated.

The homeless shelters had to be closed down to pay for the health care.

yeah those people really had some hard times ...

If they also have health problems, you tend to get meds inside too. homeless shelters don't care about that and/or maybe shitty and/or may contain dudes who don't like them and other shit like that. Or they may be closed.

No, I'm pretty sure they'd just kill the homeless. Thing is, nobody really gives a fuck about the homeless here.

If you want to call America a third world country, New Orleans.

Nah, I think Detroit beats New Orleans by a long shot. They could make a Fallout game in Detroit set in the year 2011 and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
