MechWarrior Ultimate config... (Your oppinion, please)

Lord 342

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
Been playing MechWarrior, and the recent comments in a General Discussion thread led me to this idea... Anyone here play a MechWarrior game, and if so, what is you "ultimate" configuration for a Mech? Obviously there will be some differences between versions, but I'd like to know.

Oh, and which pulse lasers are more correct? The MW3 "hoser" lasers, or the MW2/MW4 "machine gun" lasers? I liked the MW3 ones better, but I suppose it's preference.

The config that I finished MW4: Vengeance with was something like this: An Atlas with 4 Clan Flamers (Sooo good against any of the "Cat" family of mechs which suffer from heating problems), 3 LB10XACs with 72 rounds ea., and a Clan LRM 20. The LB10Xs were also Clan stuff.

So... opinions? Comments?

I was fond of the Madcat or Loki decked out with the 5 Clan ER Large Lasers. If you have the requisite heatsinks, you can kill most mechs in a single alpha strike. The sniping capacity is also quite suprising, and lasers fire accurately with a good targeting system, nailing pesky helos in one blast.

I still like the original Mechwarrior, with VGA graphics and a pre-fab mech. Can't play it on any newer computer though. :x

Or The Crescent Hawk's Revenge either.

In Mech2, I loved how there were no weapon type restrictions, so you could place all your weapons on the torso, and place all the sinks in your arms!

As for Mech4, I enjoy the range/power of 3 AC10s (clan) in combination with a pair of LRM10s and 2 ER PPCs, on my...oh, that 100- ton clan model, forget the name.

Daishi?

The 3 LB10XACs are quite the combo for range and power. That is what I used to beat MW4, after all (Hit the dropship as it was leaving, it blew up in the air. Talk about timing. couldn't' have cut it closer.

In MW3 it was very easy to leg a Mech and salvage the chassis so I would do that frequently. By the end of the game I had everyone driving Daishis and Annihilators. I liked the Supernova quite a bit, though. Six ER Large Lasers fired sequentially could pack a punch. MW4 has the most restrictive weapons layout system yet, but it still manages to be fun.

been awhile since i played this, but i really liked them, to bad my mechwarrior 2 simply disappeared, my 3 disappeared after i lent it to an uncle, and 4 got scratched...

Anyway, back on topic, the mech wich you are using doesn't make much of a difference, it's basically just a weight limit (and in 3 and 4 there's also the weapon slot thing... but ammounts to basically the same). what really makes a difference is using the weapons overpowered in each one : in my opinion, in mechwarrior 2 it's the ppc and LRMs, in mw 3 it's the lasers in general, and in the fouth one the autocannons are absolute killers.

I remember the hardest mission for me on 4 was one where you had to destroy a 100 ton mech using only what you had available (65-70 ton mechs) in a small cave, and the goddamn thing had one of those autocannons that fire like a shotgun, LBX i think... usually took me down in one shot, took some creative use of jetpacks to get that mofo down.

The Mech 4 compilation can be had for USD 20; not bad considering you get Mech 4, Black Knight, and Mercs all in one box. 4 also addressed what you mentioned about mechs being little more than weight limits; as restrictive as it is, the weapon bay system makes things more logical in a way. Also different Mechs can be equipped with different stuff; frex I've used an Argus with an LB10XAC, and an LB20XAC among other stuff, the autocannons are devastating but the Argus doesn't support Anti-missile systems or any of the electronics packages, nor can it fit jump jets. I still like the Argus, though. Don't ask me why.

I live in brazil, it's not being sold in any form or shape any longer here... (in fact, i bought MW4 when i travelled to england).

And jump jets aren't the most useful things in a 100 ton mech... just get a larger engine, will do you more good...

True about the Jump Jets... I liked them better in Mech 3 anyway, I frequently had a place to put them then, but in Mech 4 they seem less useful.

MechWarrior 4... blech.

If Microsoft had struck to the traditional design system, I would have enjoyed it. Sure it might not have been realistic in MW2 and MW3 to throw just any weapon configuration on a 'Mech, but for those of us who played the board game and read the novels, that flexibility allowed us to use our favorite 'Mech configuration (even if it didn't look the same) as long as there was already a chassis of the same weight.

As for the way the weapon effects looked, I'd say MW3 had nearly all of them right in my mind, except for the Gauss Rifle.

Never played the board game, didn't know there were novels. Have to look for them now, dammit... The weapons hardpoints do make sense in a way, it was kinda silly to see missiles pouring out of machine gun ports, or autocannons firing from missile racks. IMHO there should be more Omni slots in Mech 4, but otherwise it's good. The flamer is also useful now too, and for some perverse reason I like machineguns, even though they do negligible damage. I think it's that I like the fact that you can just lay on the fire and not let up. Very demoralizing to the enemy. What I could really wish for is a "Vulcan" type multibarrel cannon.

The weapon loadout I used depended usually on the nature of the mission.... for close up stuff around in the cities, the LBX cannons worked well... twin cannons firing point blank into a smaller mech results in an instant kill.

However, my fave weapon without doubt is the Clan PPC. Mounting these things on a Mauler or Awesome is a formidable enemy. Even a Uziel is deadly with twin PPCs and a LRM10. In the desert missions where the heat was so much higher, I'd usually mount say 2 PPC and 2 LRM20 on the heavy mechs, the rest given to armour and heat sinks... the AMS are worth their weight in gold too. The Clan ER Laser is also a worthy weapon but the lighter/ smaller size of this laser is severely penalised by the addition heat output.

I'm hoping there's gonna be a MW5 in the future but I have my doubts.

Cheers,

Eric

Too bad they won't just keep making expansions for Mech4. I for one thought the graphics, terrain and feel of the game were just about right. Unfortunately all the little shit fantards won't buy anything unless it runs the latest lighting and graphics. Poor children growing up in a world whre style is more important than substance.

I've only played the mechwarrior 3 and expansion and the mech 2 mercs. Unfortunately, I never got into the hardcore aspect of coming up with all kinds of great strategy; i usually just horded all of the same weapons onto my mech. :(

I did also play starsiege. I thought that game was kind of cool. It's a shame that they ended up turning their back on the series in favor of tribes. i have the earthsiege games, but never really played them. I like how starsiege inegrated such a rich storyline into the game. Mech Warrior isn't the only final word in giant robot strategic action games!

Well, if you're interested in MechWarrior, and BattleTech (the board game it's based on), I'd suggest going to the official site, http://www.classicbattletech.com.

Small warning: those of us who have been playing BattleTech for 5 or more years generally dislike MechWarrior 4... and the MechAssault game for XBOX... and the Mage Knight / Hero Clix-type game known as MechWarrior: Dark Age... and RoboTech.

maybe because i.... am casey nolan! :(

i'm visiting that classicbattletech.com site now, and just looking through the timeline, i realize how convoluted the history is. that's one of my gripes with the mech series of pc games. i've never been into hardcore the tabletop game or the novels, so i have no clue what's really going on when i get to playing.

more on topic, i'm now on op 4, in the vengance campaign and have been using the mauler with dueal lbx20s and an lrm 15 and lrm20. this seems to work decently. i use the missiles for when i'm approaching the enemy and the lbx when i have their back turned to me. (because rear shots are more effective, no?)

Yeah... the armour is usually thinner on the back.

You mentioned in an eariler post something about an expansion for MW3? Do you remember the name of it? I seem to recall a 'mech pak' being available but was there any others?

I know MW4 had a couple. (Black Knight and Mercenaries)

Eric

it was mech warrior 3: pirates moon. you could pilot an elemental, the lighting in the game was more advanced, but the difficulty skyrocketed.

Pilot an elemental? Why? I remember wiping those out in a volley or two from most weapons. Hell in Mech 4 you can simply walk over small vehicles like Missile carriers. Bulldog tanks are a little rougher on the structural integrity. I never tried to step on a Demolisher II, which was probably a wise choice. I'm having a bit of a problem with the final mission in Black Knight... any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for that Jabbapop. I can keep an eye for it now I know what it's called.

I'm a bit vauge on that mission Lord 342... was that the one where you fight the last mechs in the crater, a few lava pools around?

Cheers,

Eric
