Might seem like an odd question (free video editing software)

So I'll explain what I want to DO first.

I am a huge fan of the Hunger Games (both books and movies so far), and I wanted to make a tribute (no pun intended) to the character Rue, by overlaying the song "safe and sound" with various video clips of Rue--and Rue and Katniss together. I thought this would be fun to do, but here's my problem.

I have no effing idea what programs are capable of doing this for my needs (I can't afford to buy some high end program, so I need a free one). All I ever see on youtube are still images overlayed with music, whereas I actually want to use video clips I take from my copy of the movie. So, anyone here know of any programs I might use to accomplish this?

Awesome thanks, I'll check it out! If I make the video, and post it to youtube, I'll go ahead and post a link for all you Hunger Games fans out there (But it will be awhile because I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing :p )
