My favorite girl genius.

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
So anyway for about a year now I have been hooked on the comic Girl genius.
http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/

Every morning it has been a usuall ritual to start the computer and read a girlgenius strip or buck godot depending on what day it is. It gives me an allmost certain good start to the day.

This days strip however was what I found to be the best they have produced so far. The way agatha goes slowly more and more insane over the coffemachine is amasing and fun and describe the mad genius personality in such a great way.

There is a pretty nice archive there and I know some people here is following the story allready. So what page is your favorite girlgenius comic strip?

..
Are you guys serious?
Well, it might just be today's strip that looks bad.

In any case, the comic is fucking genius. It's a Steampunk-based look and story, in part based on Victorian Europe. The main character is a technological genius, where technological is nigh-magical in capabilities. The story revolves around a lost family of heroes who have dissappeared.
But really, start reading from the first page. The first volume or so is mostly backstory, but it gets better pretty quickly.

The Buck Godot comic they have running is a mixture of Noir movies and science fiction. Again a brilliant combination.

I can really recommend both comics.

Same here: it looks bad, so why waste my time reading it?

I've been reading webcomics for years and this is by far the best I've ever read. No argument or discussion at all.

What the fuck looks bad? Are you joking? Most of the other comics I read don't look 3/4's that good.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

P.S.

What Sander said makes for an explanation.

hate the look, so i'm not going to give the story a chance.

Dude, you have to give Girl Genius a chance. My brother collected the paper version of the book before it went to webcomic format. And I must say there were parts that I was laughing at so hard I got a cramp in my side.

For an example of the tongue in cheek humor here is the name of the University in the beginning; Transylvania Polygnostic University "Know Enough to be Afraid."

I especially like the Jaegermonsters. They are what does it for me.

A little bit of early dialogue,
The Baron to his son: "I need a distraction, not a sacrifice. That's what the Jaegermonsters are for!"
Assistant, grumbling, "A pity we can't use them ALL.
Jaegermonster to Assistant, "Ah-go kees an hoctopoos. Oh vait, you mama already deed, heh."

Ziltiod is correct, it is fantastic. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Cheers, Thorgrimm

I'm going to have to weigh in on the 'pro' side here, too. Phil and Kaja Foglio have been honing their craft for 20 years, and Girl Genius is definitely their paramount effort. The story and the dialogue are solid and engaging, and even if the art style isn't your bag at first, you've really got to tip your hat to the artist for the (obviously extensive) effort.

The style grows on you after awhile; granted, it's a bit cartoony and at times inconsistent, and his use of perspective seems a bit off. It's a signature touch, though, and if you can't enjoy it, you very quickly learn to at least forgive it once the story picks up.

LOL, apparently, the Chinese firewall has deteremined that it's a porn site/or a "politically" sensitive site, so it's blocked.

euhm, ok i'll give it a tiny chance when i have some spare time.

either way, it appears the comic might not agree with belgistani eyes, judging by alec's comment.

Lol, thats possible dude, but the story is really great. And keep an eye open for the Jaegermonsters, they make it real funny imo. :D

Now, I agree, to a point. I don't like the style, so I'll add it to the ever-growing list of webcomics that I'll look at "when I get 'round to it". I already waste too much time on the web to read all the back issues of every webcomic that is recommended, but I do sometimes get in the mood for them, so I may read it at some point in the future.

Oh jeez, guys! Just read the comic- it's GREAT. Judging the artwork based on ONE PAGE, and saying "Durr, I don't think I want to read this. It probably sucks." One of the most asinine things I've heard in the last week or so.

If you think this comic is ugly, you obviously haven't read many webcomics at all.
In the "Advanced Class" (second half of the archive), the artwork is very good- for that matter, the lineart in the "101 class" (first half) is good as well.

Yeah, the coloration in "101 class" is a bit wonky, plus it's purely black and white early on. However, the bad coloring after the intro isn't Foglio's fault- he wasn't the one doing it.

That said, the coloring in "Advanced Class" is done by different (better) people, and that's coincidentally the point where the story gets good/the pace picks up.

But seriously, guys... look at the art AS A WHOLE. The first time you realize how much DETAIL is packed into it, see if you still think the same.

First page of the story
First page of the second half

...By the way, the Anevka storyline was my favorite part. Runner-up's when the circus clanks lay the beatdown on Klaus and Dupree. And the Hooms!

SCHTOP! HYU HORR'BLE MONSTER-Y TING OF EVIL!

Y'know, I do find it rather tedious when people try to convert you to their favourite webcomics.

Is it not possible that some people do not enjoy the illustration and/or storytelling inherent in said comics?
I have said I will read it at some point, but I'm not going to leap to it because somebody in a forum told me to. If I don't "get it" instantly, then I will save it until I'm bored. Otherwise I'd end up reading whatever tripe people had recommended, just to save from offending them.

For Fuck's sake indeed.

Wasn't aimed at you, Big T. It was directed toward SuAside, Alec and DL's "one and done" attitude. I honestly don't care when people's opinions differ with mine, it's INDIFFERENCE that sets me off.

I edited what I saidbefore to be a tiny bit less confrontational, but wasn't able to get it in before you posted.

However, surely you can admit that it's quite difficult to judge artwork, let alone storytelling based on, you know, ONE PAGE? Even if that wasn't the actual count, it definitely wasn't much more than that.
[No, I AM NOT referring to YOU there, Big T. You said you might try reading it in the future, so where's the beef?]

It's not like we're talking about a "two gamers on a couch" comic, here.

However, I guess I should try to avoid offending you in the future, Big T. Have any comics for me to read?

Alas! I have forgotten- I don't care about your, or anyone else's, poor, delicate sensibilities. Not so far as they pertain to issues like this.

Really, should you either?

In any case, I'm really just blowing off steam today. Where better than the internet? Serious Business, yada yada.

I didn't mind the art much, but the writing...the writing pissed me off. It was boring, childish, cliche, camp, and whatever synonyms these words have.

"one page"

not really, I picked 5 at random from the archive.

so stop being such an judgemental ass, Kan-Kerai.

you're telling us we're bad people because we chose not to waste time on something until we actually have time to waste. yet you tell us we're bad people on account of being 'indifferent' to a fucking webcomic? fuck you too, jackass.

Err... 5 comics picked at random... out of a contiguous story that's 700 pages long? Wasn't that covered by:

Also, the only way you could have picked comics at random is through the drop down menu, which only labels the beginnings of story arcs.
(Within the larger story, that is- not completely unrelated arcs like you tend to see in, say, superhero comics)

Like I said, it's not a "gamers on a couch" comic where picking an entry from the archive provides a pretty accurate summation of what you'd be getting from the entire piece.

This really is a terribly ironic situation- Whenever someone says how "ugly" Fallout is or something in a similar vein, and say don't want to spend any/any more time on the game, everybody jumps down their throats.
Or maybe they've just spent five minutes in the Vault 13 cavern, or Arroyo temple. If that. Thus, they deserve getting nailed to the wall for not giving the game an actual chance, don't they?

Yet I'm a judgemental ass for taking the same stance Fallout fans do, but in this case with a comic... against some of the same people who do the jumping down the throats when it comes to Fallout?

How does that work?

Unless you're saying we're all judgemental asses, and were actually complimenting my will to go above and beyond the norm?

That'd be terribly amusing. And really... if you've got enough time to post here, play video games, etc... it shouldn't really tax your busy schedule too heavily reading a comic, should it?

Good day to you, sir. I guess.
