Netflix Developing Live Action "Legend of Zelda" series

The Vault Dweller

always looking for water.

The video streaming service is in the early stages of developing a live action series based on “Zelda,” about an ordinary boy named Link who must rescue a princess named Zelda and save a fantasy world called Hyrule, said a person familiar with the matter. As it seeks writers to work on the show, Netflix is describing it as Game of Thrones for a family audience, this person said.

Oh man if this is true it's going to be...excruciating. If it's great then great. If it's not it better be terribly awesome (like the Zelda CD-i games).

This poses lots of awkward questions though. Game of Thrones is all about political intrigue whereas the Zelda universe is pretty straightforward in storytelling. I have a feeling they meant they want a "swords and sorcery" story (since that's pretty popular due to GoT) without the adult setting and for a family audience. Also what about Link? If they have him talk it will ruin his persona yet if he's mute...maybe he just yells and screams for dialogue?

I think there are plenty of different factions/races like the Gorons, Zoras, Gerudo, and Hylians along with the Kokiri to tell a story similar to the GoT style, minus the explicit content. Using the Ocarina of Time storyline in some sense might be the way to go with this. The hard part is giving Link a voice. Heh.

Game of Thrones for a family audience, so no sex/incest and violence? And they expect it to be succesfull?

Though, this could be saved by making the right choice for Princess Zelda!

I have absolutely no idea how they will manage to do this without it being terrible. I just hope it's the cheesy, so bad it's good kind of terrible.

Trying to imagine a live-action version of Link alone (with a voice) makes me giggle. That green outfit is hard to take seriously in a non animated medium. Not to mention Zelda is as straightforward as fantasy gets; Game of Thrones gets away with it thanks to the sex, intrigue, violence and well written source material, but since Legend of Zelda has none of those things... yeah. There's not much on offer here.

House of Cards is a good series, but Marco Polo is pretty bad. And I assume this will be closer to the latter than the former until proven otherwise.

If we get to see Child Link's tunic divided into two parts, the top being a shirt, and the lower cloth bring a skirt, my fetish would finally come true.

When they say "like Game of Thrones" they mean more grounded in reality. I would hope the outfits wouldn't be exactly the same. There have been plenty of variations to the outfits over the years anyway. I would make the hat on Link much smaller to start with. Link doesn't need to have a skirt either, although I think something armored shaped as such would not be that offending to the eyes. Or just drop the traditional outfit altogether...

There is a lot of potential in telling the story that leads into Ocarina of Time as well.

Maybe it would be better if they told the story without involving Link? If they did pre-OoT, Link would be very young or not born at all. Hmmmm....

Otherwise we might end up with a child actor playing a young Link which I'm not totally sold on. I find it amusing how people are bashing the GoT comment around the web. I think they are somewhat missing the point.

We'll get to see the King of Hyrule fucking his sister to conceive Link, and he and Zelda would be half siblings.

Yeah ... but then how much of Zelda would be actually left in it? Realistic is often just another word for "more gritty" in movies.

Does someone remember that Dungeons & Dragons movie, I am pretty sure the actors STILL feel embarassed about it :look:

Not sure why you would want Zelda to be more grounded in reality, myself. The high fantasy and fairy tale aspect of the setting is probably its greatest charm.

My thinking on this is as follows. Some of this is from the GoT wiki/reviewers since it explains what I want to say easily enough:

A Game of Thrones follows three principal storylines simultaneously. It is set in a magnificent fantasy world that is mystical, but still believable. It has intrigue and dynastic struggles, along with believable characters that you actually care about.

That came straight from the wiki, basically explaining what I think they might mean, and what I think might work. We never get a good glimpse of the royalty and how things work in Hyrule. The Gerudo tribes are never explored thoroughly enough either. Lets face it. LoZ has a fairly thin plot, but it has a hell of a lot to work with. Telling a few main stories and tying them all together in one overarching plot, much like GoT, might be the way to go about it.

Simply following Link going on adventures might be a bit boring and Link hasn't enough "character" thus far. He grunts, yells, and hops around fighting bad guys, saving princesses, and collecting Triforce pieces. He likes to sleep in a lot apparently too. Not exactly GoT material, but it is a start I guess.

When I think of Legend of Zelda I don't think of a complicated storyline with believable characters. I think of a relatively straightforward story with a "just good enough" plot to keep you coming back for more each time. LoZ has potential could be told from several characters viewpoints - something which hasn't been done in the games thus far. The Civil War briefly mentioned in LoZ lore sounds not unlike the War of Kings.

So when I see Netflix and LoZ, I think of what Marvel is doing with Daredevil right now. You have ten or twelve, hour long episodes that end up telling just as epic a tale as LotR. You get a chance to explore several different characters at once, instead of one cliche hero character and a princess.

Basically I would like to see the world fleshed out a little more. I'm a huge LoZ dork so any more info on how things work when Hyrule isn't being destroyed by Ganon would be awesome.

Either that or something like this...
