Nightkin Thoughts

Seems to me that they're often childlike. I'm not just talking about the dum-dums here, it's even the nightkin who were the Masters elite. So did they regress in your opinion?

Tabitha and presumably her nightkin-kin view some of their own kind, specifically the aforementioned dum-dums. So was there some, possibly only dormant, division within the Master's Unity?

Bear in mind that I've only played New Vegas and none of the other Fallout games. All I have to go on with the rest is the Fallout wiki and YouTube videos.

I'd say there was some division in the Master's Unity. IIRC, Marcus tells you about it if you ask him while in Jacobstown. As for the other people with FEV in New Vegas, I'd have appreciated the option of sending them to Jacobstown, Westside, Freeside, or even the Strip instead of having to fight them. Those Nightkin in the cave near HELIOS? I'd have liked to talk them into heading to Jacobstown via a Speech or Medicine check; tell Marcus my Courier sent them and he'll point them to Doctor Henry (at least if you did Crazy, Crazy, Crazy AND talked Keene down). Same goes for many of the other Super Mutants at Black Mountain. There's always the option of repairing Rhonda and making Tabitha go away peacefully; why stop there?

If you had the option of sending some people with FEV to Westside, they could patrol the streets with Mean Sonofabitch. The Fiends won't want to mess with Westside if they know there's multiple FEV people around protecting it. Same goes for Freeside; any of the thugs you encounter won't want to deal with a squad of Super Mutants AND Kings. The Strip? Put some FEV folk in the casinos and they'll be some of the best bouncers. Maybe Gomorrah's clients might have a thing for sexy time with Nightkin and other Super Mutants. The possibilities are endless.

I don'T see FoNV nightkins are simpletons. More like having psychological issues. But they aren't devoid of actual cunning. It is just blurred by their disfonctionnal personalities. Although, they should have given them more distinct voice actors compared with the true idiots.

I meant more that they were immature intellectually, not stupid.

all seem to suffer from double personality.

Lilly and Leo
Tab and Rhonda
Dog and God
Davison and Antler

The "chupacabra" also hear voices (and he is probably a psyker too, synce he know hidden facts, like Arcade´s Enclave ties)

I think their leader in Jacobstown does not suffer from this condition, though.

Most FNV nightkin has suffered psychological damage as a result of extensive stealth boy use and possibly old age (all remnants of the Master's army would be 120+ by that point).

Yeah, schizophrenia. And you can even help find a cure for it, which I always do. I trot off to Jacobstown right when I get Rex as a companion. Usually, I've already killed Violetta and taken her brain before doing this. But when I get Rex his new brain, that's when I also recruit Lily and find the chewed-up Mark II Stealth Boy. Then I talk Keene down and pass the Science check with Dr. Henry to finish the quest. Two companion quests done right away.

Most of the time, though, I've never gotten the recording trigger with Lily after adding her to my party full-time. Only once have I ever done so, and even then I had her take her meds at full doses.

While most nightkin do indeed have a master surrogate and a follower, i don't think at all that their original personality was stupid.

They were fucking nightking, the elite of the master army, spies, commanders, scouts, informants, etc... Their very nature of nightking required them to be smart and skilled.
Not all smarts supermutant were nightkins (they needed generals, scientists, quartermaster etc...), but all nightkins were smart.

What happens after the fall of the Master and the destruction of the vats is that they lost thei purpose, and it hit all of them very hard. Some of them went to suicide missions. Some others joined other leaders (Attis, Gammorin) with the purpose of rebuilding the unity. Some fled and tried to find themselves. Some found a new life with Marcus at Broken Hills. The Nightkin had a delayed reaction, after decades of stealthboy overuse. Part of them knew that they took the wrong path. That part they tried to shut down, and they listened to the voice that told them to keep using stealthboy, to keep seeking stealthboy at all cost. That part sold them some new purpose, told them they were still soldiers, like those japanese decades after WW2, because if they still have a purpose, everything they do become justified. But the voice of reason is stilll within them, and the more they try to shut it down, the less rationale they become, and the more childish they appear. If you don't help them confront it, they will give in further and further to the seemingly stupid personality.

Or maybe I'm overthinking it

I think you hit the nail on the head.

Intellect and maturity are not the same. Immature people can be extremely intelligent. Given that most supermutants of any type are intellectually immature, I think nightkin being as such is parsimonious (it assumes the least).

There are Nightkin who find new purposes in life. Lily used to be a spy and assassin in the Master's army. By the time of FNV's story, she's a Bighorner herder living in Jacobstown. Dog/God arguably saw his share of time and combat working for the Master, too, prior to falling in with Elijah. Depending on whether you save one of his personalities, fuse them both, or kill him, he has different outcomes. In my game and head-canon, I merge Dog/God by passing a series of high Speech checks and keep him from burning himself alive in the Sierra Madre's kitchen. Afterwards, he goes to Westside and helps keep the locals safe from Fiends. They already have enough trouble with Mean Sonofabitch around so an extra person with FEV will make the Fiends piss their pants more. Thank you, companion mods.
