No Country for Old Men

Can anyone explain to me why this highly acclaimed movie, with highly acclaimed actors, directed by highly acclaimed brothers, and written by a highly acclaimed author - is still only showing at select theatres? This whole time I'm getting B-rate movies like Beowulf and Hitman shoved down my throat, but if I want to see No County, I have to drive 40 miles and pay $10 for a damn movie ticket. Is it because Miramax doesn't pull the same strings that companies like 21st Century Fox can, or is it because some brand name theatres deem No Country too violent for general audiences? (Saw 4 is cool to show everywhere, though!)
I'm making the trip this weekend to see it, I'm just pissed that something that's supposed to be a masterpiece is only playing in about 1/5 of the theatres that Hitman's playing in. It's almost like the movie industry wants us to all devolve.

I've never even heard of it... (though maybe it just hasnt crossed the pound yet)

It's not around for the same reason that children of men, pan's labyrinth and into the wild didn't ever get wide releases. Because people go see lame ass movies that are overhyped and suck the big one :(.

This isn't really a useful post, I just wanted to summarize Children of Men for anyone who hasn't seen it:

SUPERCALIFRAGILISTIC EXPIALADOCIOUS!

I think you'll find it is a single word :P

It's not, yet. It'll hit the Netherlands (and probably Belgium) in February 2008. Always keep tabs on Coen films.

As for Makagulfazel's post...who knows? Probably the theatres simply didn't expect any commercial value. It's happened before with Coen films that they'd have select theatres and would constantly sell out there, forcing exploiters to spread its availability. But maybe there really is no interest in the title amongst movie-going audience?

I don't know, I rarely have that problem here in Europe, titles that you'd think are obscure often make the main theatres and if they don't most Dutch cities have "obscure" theatres anyway.

It still pisses me off somewhat that Takeshi Kitano's films never made it to European cinemas (as far as I know). But c'est la vie.

It was available in my local theather last week.

Fuck my friends. Their cheap coupons. One of my friends' father was associated with one of the film industries and had free ticket coupons for the second week the movie was showing, so they offered to take me with them this weekend for absolutely free; but the movie stopped showing. It was only on in my local theather for a grand total of two days. Two fucking days, grand art gets.

I was lucky enough to see Pan's Labyrinth when I did, and the theater we got to see if it off was the "who cares about this shit theather", the small, unkept one that's stuffed into the least accessible corner of the theather near their storeroom.

I don't understand the fuckwittery of this world, you have gold, and you'd like to eat dog shit instead. Please, more dogshit sir. I'd really like more.

:seriouslyno:

Edit: I take it back. Providence has given me one more chance to watch this movie, and with my father. I guess I'll be seeing it after all today. I better head off to bed, so I can wake up in time to watch it (1 PM, currently 3 AM). Good night all.

I dont think i ever had a problem watching a new movie in theaters, the problem is nothing worth while came out in months. Still its nice to know that i could see No Country at the UA if i wanted too. Are movie theaters that much more liberal in NY?

"Pan's Labiryth" sucked ass. I hate it when they make children the main characters in movies, as they either act like adults - too smart and reasonable for their age - or like children - too stupid and careless for a story.

Silencer- you got shit for taste. I loved Pan's Labrynth. The balance between the story's dark fairy tale and the espionage story was great and surprising.

Also the book for No COuntry for Old Men was fucking great.

Dude, you shouldn't get hung up on those kind of details. Sure, child actors sometimes suck, but not when they're integral to the story, like in Pan's Labyrinth or Lilya 4-Ever

One of the best movies of the past decade.
