Well, I have been there but so were 200 000 other people. So I had to follow the speech on a screen. I think I have to sleep a night other my impressions and think about what I have heard.

Well, I will hold back my opinion as a political scientist for now, but allow me to make a personal statement:

It takes balls to talk in front of 200 000 cynics who are cautiously examining every word you say and "buh" you into oblivion for any mistake you might make.

It takes balls to walk the thin line of trying to appeal to the voters in America and to us self righteous Europeans at the same time. (Most Europeans probably didn't get how much risk he took for criticizing the USA).

Well, I am quite interested what you fell and think about the speech in general.

Cynics? Our newspapers reported you Berliners were in the "throes of Obamania"

Well thats what the newspapers wrote, but Berlin is basically the German capital of punks, unemployed left wing graduates, the German anti globalization movement, hippies ... liberals, hell even our major is gay (and is famous for crashing every party  ) .... Well basically the whole coffee grounds of the European Anti Americanism.

Yeah, we were really excited about the visit but there was a cautious silence during parts of his speech and only people inner circle (who could actually see Obama) were applauding frenetically. The masses around me cheered more cautiously. As I locked into their faces I could see that they understood what Obama meant by "us" and "we can!".

But nevertheless, it was a good speech.

PS: One of the last songs before Obama entered the stage was

All that said, I loved my visit to Berlin and would go back in an instant.

The speech was good, not as moving as those of the past... Christ that guy recited the entire thing from memory?!

I am puzzled as to why 200 000 Germans showed up for that speech in the first place.

I mean, I get the fact that Europe is indirectly influenced by the way the US is run - but seriously, 200 000 people? When was the last time a European politician managed to get such crouds?
1942?

Sorry but Obama girl is like... hot. I am a political scientist.. I liked the speech. But...

Obamagirl. Hot.

What bothered me about Obama's trip to Germany was that he pulled out of a scheduled visit to LRMC (the medical center Wounded US soldiers are treated at prior to being sent back stateside) simply because he was told that he couldnt take his aides and photographer with him (to be sure the visit wouldnt be misconstrued or used as a political tool).

Well, I bet the last popstars casting band got at least that much too. : P

I live in berlin and everything was normal here, when he visited. I know nobody, who was "hot" to see him.

I see great potential for an obama truck/float at the love parade. Other than that .. i like the guy and i get the feeling he has a better international image then McCain - which would really help the US.

As for the cancellation this was a political trip - if there was nothing to gain from visiting he would have been just wasting campaign time. Might have made him look more of a nice guy but zero coverage would have made him a bad politician.

hehe, if Obama wants to be even more popular, he should think about having a meeting in Kazantip. Hypnobama is teh cool guy.

Sorry to bust your Clever Joke, but y'know, the Americans started their European land offensive in 1944, not 1939.

No...the germans....they started this little war in 1939. Look it up.

iii wrote it's a nation of punks, unemployed left wing graduates, anti globalization movements, hippies, liberals.....

Germans.....ya know...germans.

Aeh no. Maybe in Berlin are more punks and stuff, but no, the germans at all are not a nation of punks and or unemployed left wing graduates and so on. Germans are only lazy and every year if it gets warmer and warmer, they try to invade Mallorca. They can not win by war, so they try there new tactics since some years. It is called "eimersaufen" (bucket boozing) with the guys from other countrys.

/Edit: The most time, the germans win with this tactic. :>
