I get a free copy of Fallout 3 with my Xbox One copy of Fallout 4...
Two sub-mediocre games for the price of one!

I can understand someone would enjoy it, but what charm did it have, aside from being the most popular game in the series?I like Fallout 3. The music and ambiance always appealed to me and I just ignore the fact that it's not in the same spirit as the originals. It still had its charm.
Just reinstalled New Vegas in case Fallout 4 starts to grate on my patience again though.
Then you get the rare opportunity to be twice as disappointed.
But serious, if you don't like Fallout 4 why did you buy it then?
It was the first Fallout game I played and I had no knowledge of the franchise whatsoever so that certainly helped me enjoy it. Going in I really fell in love with the aesthetics, Inon Zur's music (the ambient music is quite relaxing at times), and the overall art direction of the game. I think the art direction was done very well (and also in Fallout 4) and that helped me get immersed in the world. It is important to keep in mind it was my first experience in the Fallout universe. As such, it had its funny and sometimes dark moments - slavers at Paradise Falls, Little Big Town, Moira in Megaton, Tenpenny, Dukov, the Enclave, the Brotherhood, Tranquility Lane, I could go on. I really don't have any objective argument for what makes me like Fallout 3, it just has some ambiance in its presentation that I find relaxing to play. While I understand the hostility toward the game it is always going to be a nice experience for me despite the valid criticisms.I can understand someone would enjoy it, but what charm did it have, aside from being the most popular game in the series?I like Fallout 3. I bought it as a fan of the series, and that is it. I needed to play it for myself so I could testify to its massive shortcomings, and perhaps to prevent others from purchasing it.
Heed my words, I shall never buy any expansions for it.
You might want to give Fallout New Vegas a try, it tries to set up a more realistic functional world and has more role playing opportunities, but if you don't like the shooting parts of Fallout 3 this could disappoint you as well.
I have played all Fallout games myself including the dreaded Fallout Brotherhood of Steel (okay I did not play Fallout Shelter) but yeah, I am also really disappointed in how much the series has gone into decline.
Have already mentioned four times today how much I wish Fallout Van Buren had been released in 2002/2003. It would have been a good series conclusion.

I've beaten New Vegas a few times. I feel like a masochist for playing through Fallout 3 two times. New Vegas was...okay. Not good, but okay. Adequate.
It still suffers from its own batch of problems, mostly inherited from Bethesda's shitty writing and gameplay mechanics decisions.

I don't think Fallout needed a series conclusion. Thankfully, the games are independent of each other and didn't give in to the failed notion that stories told in the form of a trilogy work for video games (I've never seen a trilogy end well). Fallout has tons of potential now, and I hope it is not wasted by bad decision making.Have already mentioned four times today how much I wish Fallout Van Buren had been released in 2002/2003. I definitely liked the atmosphere of The Pitt. I really liked the direction the game took with the Pitt DLC, and while many locations and factions felt out of place it at least kept skill checks, memorable characters and locations and compared to FO4 the dialog is pretty good.
Paladin Danse, Piper and dogmeat are the only characters I really can really and I just today finished the main story at just under 100 hours, would have been about 70 but I restarted my first play because I despise the male VA even after having almost 30 hours clocked with him. Fallout 3 has more going for it in the first 2 hours of game play than fallout 4 has in its entirety, its pretty much the equivalent of Oblivion to Skyrim.
