Original FO/FO2 Polymeshes

First time out of the vault
I'm hoping this is the right place for this post. I know it's the right community. :)

And I dug around for a while, but didn't see anyone discussing this before.

Basically, I'm assuming that the Fallout and Fallout 2 character sprites were originally 3D objects that were sprited and imported into the 2D fallout engine.

Over the years, has anyone discovered the original Fallout polymeshes? That is, the original 3D objects?

It would be really cool to have these, for various reasons...

Thanks!

Every few months someone is grabbing this topic, so it seems....

The source files are property of Bethesda Softworks and no, they will not give out anything, because it's "just not what they do".

We will never see any source material, if nothing very lucky happens, which I doubt will happen.

Also if we would have the models and animation assets, we would use them and not fiddle around with sprite copy&paste.

stupid question, can't the talented 3d modelers out there just re-create them?

Re-creating the 3D models and textures would probably be quite easy.
Re-creating the style and animation would be much harder, I would guess.

It's not about being talented. Just like copy & paste doesn't require any artistic skills or talent. It's rather about that people talk, and talk about it, instead of work. But indeed, it's better to talk than work.

Are they just refusing to release the files or don't have them anymore or are they not responding at all?

Who contacted them and when/how? I don't see any reasons why they should really refuse to release even a few basic models (we're not saying build us an editor here), seeing as these games are so very old but the modding community is still very active...

Bethesda is not releasing other persons stuff. That's what they say since ever and I doubt they will change that in close and far future.

Also the models aren't the only thing that is needed. Animations as well, because else we got the same problem like now: Models easy to make, but original looking animations, a pain. So either we get both or nothing.

Anyway... It's faster to just start trying to recreate model and animation, even if the model is just a block-person as placeholder. Correct animations is the way to go, imo. But like Continuum wrote... everyone is just talking about it, nobody is doing it.

Here. And models/animation files are nothing more than source files of the game, just like source code is.

Of course, but you're dealing with greedy company like Bethsoft is. Maybe they could release source files as some sort of DLCs:

- source code = 40$
- mutie model = 5$
- mutie death anim = 8$
- mutie walk anim = 8$

etc. So people could fill their wallets with even moar $$$.

Besides, you'll never know what files still exist and which ones are lost forever  So this debate is pointless, it's better waste a time on learning basics of 3d software rather than thinking how to get a source files.

Well you're our skilled and talented resident 3D modeling expert, Contie. Show us that it can be done - re-create some of the existing animations and it might inspire others to follow suit ...

Well, I actually did it more than three years ago - walk anims for male and female, to be more specified.

Pffft. Nothing is going to inspire others... They prefer to talk, instead of work.

Lisac has recreated animations for his female child critter. This should be proof enough, that it works.

See Lexx? It's easier to talk, or wait (maybe someone else will do it for me?), or complain how hard this could be, rather than actually start doing. But this is how things are working.

Where are they?
They ended in Recycle Bin long time ago.

Well, I know that. :P That's the reason why many game mods never see the light of day. It's either bad planning phase or lazyness or both combined.

But in case someone wants to point towards me now: I totally have no skill with animating things. I've tried it a few times years ago and I just suck at it.

Recreating the meshes isn't that hard:

above model done about 3-5 minutes it doesn't look good though for a starting point its good. But the real problem would be animating them well actually if its done by more than one person then its easier, but still take a lot of time especially there aren't many people who use the same softwares.

there's always the possibility that they just used paint and did it pixel by pixel and that there are no models..?

No. All objects have been created with 3d modeling software.
