Photographers, Anyone?

JohnnyEgo

Mostly Harmless
Vaguely inspired by Wintermind's question regarding guns and photography from the gun owner's thread, I wonder if there are other folks here with an interest in photography?

I got into photography because I wanted to start cataloging some of my wood work for sale, and I was tired of taking crappy pictures with crappy cameras. I'm still very much an amateur, but I enjoy the hobby quite a bit.

So in this thread, what I am looking for is an example of a picture or pictures you personally took. Also, feel free to include any details about the gear you used, any post processing techniques, or the location.

I'll start it off with these:

ys010.jpg

Yosemite Valley at Twilight.

pawneetitan3.jpg

My truck at Pawnee National Grasslands. I pushed the contrast and the color saturation up in post-process to make it pop a little more.

dbb03.JPG

The Devil's Backbone in Loveland, CO. Taken by a Canon S95 point & shoot.

hg59a.jpg

This one has some nasty high ISO noise, but I like it anyways.

vegas001.jpg.JPG

Red Rock Canyon in Las Vegas. Shot with a CPL, but otherwise, the colors were really that vivid.

vin028.JPG

My son and his English cousin. Taken with a 50mm F/1.8.

I look forward to seeing what you guys can do.

Some photos taken by meh in my creative moments, all with Canon 350D. Sorry about the lame watermarks - I've had some trouble with those images and the originals are on a different hard-drive and I'm too lazy to get them now.

Thunderstrike_by_skull.jpg

Lightning storm in Australia - no rain! Best shots of lightning are when you keep taking long exposures (10-15 seconds) into the darkness, waiting for that perfect lightning to strike while the shutter is open.

mary_jane_by_skull-d2z9xe4.jpg

A young one, growing. I didn't have a good lens for this, but I tried to get that macro look anyway. (I've also learned that if you take off the lens, turn it around and hold it against the camera, you can achieve an extremely powerful macro focus. That's not the technique I used here however, because it makes the depth of field thin like a razorblade, allows very little light to come in and you're holding the lens in your hand, so it takes a lot of work to get a sharp image out of it. Still, beats spending hundreds on a macro lens, IMO.)

Praise_Jah_by_skull.jpg

This was a cool photoshoot of a reggae musician, a friend of mine, who wanted a very ganja-themed session. It's his reflection in a plate of fresh hash oil, the image then flipped vertically as to be the right way up.

The_Golden_Spiral_by_skull.jpg

A cool Japanese fire poi lady, doing her thing at night. I found, through trial and error, that short exposures are better for this type of image - otherwise there's just too much flame on the screen. Also, toying with the zoom while the shutter is opened allows for double-exposures (hence the two faces).

Zombie_Tunnel_by_skull.jpg

Zombie in a dark tunnel. Barely got away that time. ;)[/spoiler:033cc1a2fd]

Very nice. I use a 400D (XTi), so we have a very similar camera. Your low-light exposure is fantastic. Mine still ends up being more luck than skill. I haven't gone much beyond the auto mode of my flash yet. (430EX).

ys013.jpg

A reflection shot at Yosemite. Another hiker tipped me off to a low angle shot in a very small stream on an obscure side trail.

Yeah, this was a long time ago.

Used to photograph old industrial sites. Had a coupla shows here and there in Poland. One in Perth, Australia, of all places, iin 2004. Worked as a fashion catwalk photographer for a bit, didn't like it much. Except ogling models, ofc.

Don't take much pics lately. Busy drawin' stuff.

Very cool. There is a big group of hobbyists around here who take pictures of abandoned buildings and industrial sites. There is a ghost town from the 20s right by my house, but according to my local park ranger, snakes have made the buildings their home. So I'm out.

Like most things in life, I imagine photography becomes less of a hobby and more of a job when you depend on it for income.

I started getting better at taking pictures of people when I finally learned to turn off the flash and go for natural light.

vin022.JPG

Obligatory shot of wife & kid.

I cant say I'm much of a photographer...but I do sometimes photograph the veggies (on this occasion it's the long eggplant) that I grow in my backyard with my all powerful 2.1mp digital camera.

"The eggplant, aubergine, melongene, brinjal, or guinea squash (Solanum melongena) is a plant of the family Solanaceae (also known as the nightshades) and genus Solanum. It bears a fruit of the same name, commonly used in cooking. As a nightshade, it is closely related to the tomato and potato and is native to Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka."

@JohnnyEgo - you have a lovely family.

I'll take that as a compliment! :)

Those are cool, especially the last one, hehe!

I have trouble deciding when I've gone too far with Photoshop, so I've decided to always relocate as little pixels as possible. I allow myself vast colour/contrast corrections, sometimes a little blur or sharpen (and crop), but generally I try not to add any new elements.

Oh, and I also have a Hookers road photo somewhere! (Though I think it was a different Hookers road, it was in Farnham, Surrey, I think).

Your taking is correct :)

I believe when you find your own favourite effects, they create some sort of a style, a signature of yours.
In my case, I still look for them, but I'm starting finding them when more and more stuff is being done.
For example the session with the nice girl (Victoria Kulis) I have attached, they were done at my sis' studio (she studies photography) and gave me a lot of new ideas for future aproaches.

Although I love photography my true love is still making music :D But they somehow co-exist peacefuly.

Oh, and I also have a Hookers road photo somewhere! (Though I think it was a different Hookers road, it was in Farnham, Surrey, I think).

Mine was taken in Walthamstow, London :)

Your pictures are powerful and the place you visited look very interesting !
It's a shame they are so small, not much detail to look at :(

This was taken with my Sony w580 cellphone.
Looks like a nuke went off or something.

All this with my Sony w290 camera.

I'm really new at this, I still need a lot of practice with the cam.

Looks kinda like nuts :smugoticon:

Some of mine.. some are more edited, some not. Had to sell my EOS 400D and lots of stuff to pay energy bills. :( I miss photography so much.. I have planned to buy a lomo camera though, I also go on ocassional Super 8 camera trips.

Anyway, here are the pics:

It was shot ouf of my bathroom (Leipzig, Germany) window when a bad weather front approached. :D It looked already very scary unedited, color filters are applied ofcourse and contrast is highered. Although I don't know why it is so grainy here, I will look if I have the source picture to compare.

I'm a Journalist for the Utah National Guard so any of my photos need to be released before they're put out. I've got some fucking awesome photos from morocco, but not all of them have been released yet. I'll try and put those on when they are. That and I have some film that I'll need to process when I get back. For now I'll see what I can put up.

This one is from morocco! They couldn't release any of the really cool photos of that story though because the moroccans don't want to be in any of our photos this year. They're apparently worried about getting attacked because of it. But we can write about it all we want.

Lol.

I just got a digital camera and have been messing around. So far I have no idea what's a good picture and what's complete bullshit. Here are some examples.
