As we look at Fallout 4's flaws and various failures let us go back to the game that proves that a first person view and a real time combat system can work with a well written and designed story and world, as is Fallout: New Vegas. New Vegas breathed life into the franchise we thought Bethesda slaughtered, showing that Fallout still had hope. While the prospect nowadays is lower then usual let us look back on the four DLCs Obsidian released for New Vegas.

These DLCs have varying quality according to various opinions, and I want to see out of the community which ones are considered great or bad for the according reasons. Please feel free to write a comment on why your choice is good. Vote now for the best New Vegas DLC!

I know I'm going to be in the minority, but I voted Honest Hearts. I think Joshua Graham is very well written and as most of my characters were cowboy survivalists it was awesome to pack up my dog and hunt in Zion. Also sneering imperialist perk results in the funniest lines in the game. I would vote OWB second because it's great, characters, story, and foot penises. Dead Money is 3rd for me, quite honestly I was very disappointed that Veronica wasn't written into the story. LR is last for me simply because while Ulysses is a great character I didn't feel like "answers" was enough motivation for what was clearly a setup.

I think the idea is that LR is supposed to fit late enough in the game that the Courier feels pretty secure and powerful, and has already taken revenge on the one person that screwed her so she's looking for a reckoning with the original person who set the Courier up.

I mean, "revenge" is one of the basic motivating factors in the game.

While revenge may have been a theme of the game it was never a motivating factor for my Courier, he only killed Benny because he was hired to do a job, think Angel Eyes from "The Good the Bad and the Ugly." I do get that if your Courier is after revenge why they would want to go after Ulysses.

Yeah, there are basically three central (potential) motivations for the Courier built into New Vegas:
- Revenge.
- Professionalism.
- Figure out then have your say on what's going on here.

If you're motivated exclusively by one of the three, then professionalism isn't going to get you into the Canyon Wreckage. But I guess "my character didn't want to do the thing" is valid roleplaying.

Dead Money is my favorite. It has great story and characters. The game play with the poison cloud and radios is challenging and provides a nice change of pace.

I go with OWB.

It is funny, ridiculous and yet well written, interesting characters, interesting exploration, it has robot scorpions, it has the best not modded player home in the game and allows us to return to the DLC area (which some of the other DLCs don't), it also has some pretty wacko weapons and a stealth suit, also customizable perks at the end (we can choose to keep our old body parts, remove them entirely or keep a combination of both, and we can change whenever we want to IIRC) and it has the best quote an enemy says "You're not match for, SCIENCE!".

I never thought I would love a Fallout DLC so full of absurdity, but it is really well made so I vote for it even when I usually prefer more dark and serious stories.

1.) Honest Hearts (Everything about it, and where my blurb under my name came from)
2.) Lonesome Road (Very nice, but nothing beats clean water and rain)
3.) Dead Money (Great story and hard choices)
4.) Old World Blues (Very good, but I found the missions a bit repetitive.)

Damn right! I loved the absurdity and hilarity of the characters, how each one was so different and unique. I also found exploration fun and worthwhile. The story while arguably stupid, works and touches me at an emotional level. The whole inhumanity of the main cast makes for an interesting setting, and helping them find their lost humanity is one of my favourite moment/s. Otherwise, good show!

I'd go with OWB, it's fun, has a lot of memorable locations and characters and it's silly. Only problem I have with it is the beginning dialogue which goes on for 30+ minutes which feel like rambling sometimes. I don't mind good dialogue, but it goes on way too long when a good amount of it is just bickering.

Lonesome Road would be my second favorite since I usually use combat oriented characters and it's a good challenge. That and it ties up the Ulysses story arc up in a nice little bow too.

Dead Money.

Great story. Great and memorable characters. Interesting lore and imaginative location. Plus it pays homage to a great Humphrey Bogart film.

IMO the Father Elijah winning is the best Fallout: New Vegas ending. It's just so wonderfully bleak and dramatic it captures the spirit of the first Fallout.

Old World Blues
The dialogue was front-heavy and camp, but I know I just enjoyed this one the most gameplay wise.
Honest Hearts felt a little lacking and short. Lonesome Road's story and Ulyssess's motivations felt very disjointed.
I'm appreciating Dead Money much more from a story perspective, but didn't really enjoy the gameplay the first time around.

Yeah I didn't enjoy the gameplay of Dead Money, and the lack of exploration, repetitive areas and annoying enemies just ruined it for me.

Meh, I enjoyed the change of pace in Dead Money. It's linearity made it feel more urgent. The gameplay served to exacerbate this feeling with the radio signals, poison gases and holograms.

Perhaps it's because the original gameplay of New Vegas was lacking heavily.

I admit that I've enjoyed Dead Money more on a repeat playthrough.
I can't really articulate why. Some of it, I think, is that I was rushing through the content a bit much to really just enjoy it. Part of it is that I was much less of a Hoardy MacHoarderson and just kept my baggage light. The speakers were not that frustrating to me except in "final dungeon" leading up to the gold vault and even that was not a dealbreaker.

I take perverse pleasure in the crafting content OWB offers, but paradoxically, I hate micromanaging my inventory, especially through all the damn menus of the Pipboy. But as a well-conditioned gamer, I'm a kleptomaniacal completionist that has to loot everything even vaguely useful. Compound this with the fact that I always play hardcore and inventory management really does matter. Do I have 30 Purified Waters? Man I am taking that shit with me out of Dead Money. It does not matter that I have running water from every base location and safehouse or a few dozen RadAways. I have thousands of Sierra Madre chips and I'll still try and lug that scrap metal away with me so I can theoretically build a few more Repair Kits that I'll never use.

Small surprise that I liked OWB more the first time through. I'm feeding the pencils and clipboards into that one machine just so I can get more crafting mats.

I chose Dead Money. As great as New Vegas is, I think it's still far too easy to horde huge amounts of gear and gain a large amount of caps by doing very little. That's why I liked it; it stripped me of my huge amount of junk and cast me into a fairly dangerous world that was difficult to survive in. Or, at least, difficult to survive in until you master the art of blowing legs off.

I really didn't like Lonesome Road; it felt far too linear in terms of gameplay and yet still lacked the narrative benefits that linearity can offer. I couldn't emphasise at all with Ulysses and the Marked Men just felt like a very dull, tired reskin of an enemy that should have been put to bed long ago. Was fun to nuke shit up, though.

Dead stuck between Honest Hearts and Old World Blues. HH hits the exact tone and pacing I was looking for, while OWB was very, very enjoyable. I'm completely and utterly right between the two.

I'm going to go with Honest Hearts for the vote, since my second favourite gun was the .45 Auto (and all unique variants) was from it.
